Is There Enough Talent for Ronda Rousey to Establish a Legacy in Women’s MMA?
Strikeforce recently put on one of, if not thee, biggest women’s fight in mixed martial arts history.
And this was under the ownership of Zuffa, the same company that owns the UFC. The same company that is run by Dana White, who has gone on record saying there are not enough talented fighters on the women’s side of the sport for him to consider putting a division in the UFC.
The question now, after such a smashing success of a fight between Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey, of course, is, “When are we gonna see women’s MMA in the UFC?”
Don’t count on it happening any time soon.
While White believes that Tate vs. Rousey was every bit the fight and more that people expected, he holds true to what he has said in the past.
“I feel the same way about (women’s MMA) as I did three weeks ago,” he said recently. “What just happened is what I’ve been saying all along. There’s not enough great women to create an entire division, but there’s gonna be these one-off fights that will be great.”
White was beyond pleased with the fight that Tate and Rousey put on in Ohio on March 3. He just doesn’t feel that fights such as that are currently sustainable over the long term in women’s MMA.
In fact, he believes that Ronda Rousey – who defeated Tate via armbar in the first round – could be one of the most talented women’s mixed martial artists in history. He just doesn’t believe that she will be granted the opportunity to prove her legacy.
“I think Ronda Rousey is unbelievable and I think she’s gonna be a huge star. But unfortunately, I think she’s gonna end up being a Lucia Rijker of our sport. She’s so nasty, I just think there’s not enough competition out there for her to really test her and really have her showcase in some great fights.”
Many boxing aficionados considered Rijker the top women’s boxer in the world, but like White feels about Rousey, most pundits believed that Rijker never had enough high-caliber competition to prove herself.
“If you look at a guy like Anderson Silva… Anderson Silva has gone up against everything the 185-pound division had to offer and some guys at 205,” explained White. “He’s had his low moments, but he’s been able to look spectacular. You can say this guy is gonna go down (in history) if not the best, as one of the best ever.
“Ronda Rousey is not gonna have a career where there’s gonna be all this amazing talent you can throw at her that she can beat.
White summed up Rousey’s conundrum, saying, “We knew we had a great fight between two very talented women. The difference is I have 375 guys that do that every day. I have two women.”
