Ultimate ball, worst idea ever?
Decide for yourself:
Quote:
Today's UCMMA 27 press conference and weigh-ins saw the promotion introduce a new game to those in attendance - 'Ultimate Ball'.
Not afraid of introducing controversial new elements into their shows -- such as the much talked about UK-1 series -- UCMMA revealed that they would be hosting the new ball game inside the cage.
The premise of the game is that two teams will take to the cage to battle each other, with a net at either side. The aim is to get the ball into the net by any means possible. However, your opponents are allowed to tackle, clinch, strike and manhandle you in order to prevent it.
They'll roll out this new format at tomorrow night's UCMMA event, with two teams going at it. Bloodline Fight Team and Team Razor will be the first to square off.
As noted at the press conference, the rules include:
2x5 minutes round, with a one-minute overtime in the event of a draw
5 players (4 active, one sub)
Slams and tackles allowed
Body shots only
Strikes are only allowed to the ball carrier
UCMMA promoter Dave O'Donnell sat down with YourMMA.tv after the press conference and said:
"The premise is four years in the making and I've never been so excited to produce yet another new sport within MMA. Just remember one thing - in 1993 they said the UFC had no chance of becoming a recognised sport; look at it now!
"They need to get the gyms established - it's another way for the gyms to get exposure, keeps them active and keeps them on TV. They can't fight every month, but they can stay active with this."
UCMMA 27 will air on Sky Sports next week - visit www.ucmma.com for more details.
