Fedor Breaks Down Fight with Pedro Rizzo, Differences Between M-1 and UFC

Fedor Emelianenko returns to fighting on June 21 in Russia, where he will face former UFC heavyweight contender Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo.

The former No. 1 heavyweight is on a two-fight streak since leaving Strikeforce. Rizzo, however, has been out of action for a while, having difficulty lining up a fight.

Fedor spoke with GroundandPoundTV recently in Germany, breaking down the fight with Rizzo, and discussing the differences between his promotion, M-1 Global, and other promotions such as the UFC, whom his management has been unable to come to terms with in the past.

Rizzo was interviewed by M-1 recently

"I think, that I'm getting closer to the UFC. A win over Fedor will bring me way closer to a return to the UFC. So this fight is very important for my future career. Of course I don't think, that if I win, I'll be back in the UFC right away, but I'll be one step closer."-Said Pedro Rizzo

Q:What are your expectations from the fight with Fedor?
A:"I'm training now, and very motivated for this fight. Fedor is the guy, who I always wanted to meet in the ring. For several reasons we've never fought . When I was very close to fight him,I was defeated one fight before the possibility. or for example we were fighting in different organizations. There was a moment, when I needed to defeat Barnett at the affliction tournament, so I could face Fedor, But I lost the fight. There also was a moment when we were both in our peaks, but I was in the UFc, while he was in Pride. And finally we meet! I always thought, while watching his fights, that I will eventually fight this guy and here, it happens now!"

Q:You always wanted this fight, But now Fedor is not in his peak, yeah he has two wins in a row, but before that he had 3 consecutive . Do you regret, that you never fought him earlier?
A:"No, I do not regret. We were in different organizations, I fought in America, and he was a champ in Pride. People say, that Fedor's not the same anymore, But I don't agree with that.I think, that Fedor's still in his peak, anyone can lose sometimes, There are no invincible people. I think, that the only thing that changed in him, is his psychological component. He came to fight (recently) while being 60-70% ready, he thought, that it's enough to win. After the loss tp Wetdum, something happened to him (changed). And then 2 more loses followed. But now he is gradually recovering (bringing back his former self). I think that a fight against him, will be very colorful and I'm not disappointed, from the fact that we only meet now."

Q:You cancled your last fight because of an elbow injury, Now you feel good?
A:"I had an elbow surgery in November, and now I have no problems with it. Now I give 100% of myself in training. At the moment Glover Teixeira helps me to prepare. Closer to the fight, I will fly to Holland and will continue to prepare for the fight, there. it's only a 2-3 hour flight to St. Petersburg from there."

Q:Have you come to any conclusions, after watching Fedor's loses?
A:"You know, there are no invincible people. Fedor was on a 10 years wining streak and as I said before, he simply underestimated his opponents
and wasn't fully ready to go out fighting . Now Fedor significantly improved
his striking technique in Holland, and he is as good as he was before when it comes to ground skills. It is difficult to talk about his weaknesses. I just need to go out there and fight him, and then we'll see what happens. I will do everything to win, and I don't think he'll give me the win easily, it all depends on whether I can use my chance. (what? )"

Q:You said, that you want to go back to the ufc, will a victory over Fedor bring you closer to signing with the UFC?
A:"Tbh, I'm happy with the fact, that I'm fighting Fedor in Russia. It's crazy! but I hope, that a win over him, will really bring me closer to signing a contract with the UFC."
