Best art for self defence.

Hey im looking for a style that is best for self defence (real life fighting)
I hear striking is best from some people as thats what tends to happen in a street fight (lots of punching/kicking)
BUt ive seen guys take down and restrain others who apparently box by grappling.
Now i know if it was 2 on 1 than going to the ground would be useless. But i mean 1 on 1, which guy would have advantage in winning the fight... Either by knockout or restraining the person so he can no longer move untill police arive by grappling.

thanks in advance.
