Scott Coker Says Lorenz Larkin Is 'Probably The Most Dangerous Striker In MMA

Strikeforce general manager Scott Coker made it pretty clear after the last SF event that Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza would likely be the next guy to face off with Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold. So it was pretty surprising when Lorenz Larkin vs. Rockhold was announced for November 3rd in Oklahoma City instead. To justify the bout, Coker implied that Strikeforce matchmaker Sean Shelby wanted this fight instead, and made some bold claims about Larkin's skills (via MMA Junkie):

"If you look at Lorenz Larkin's record when he was fighting at 205, he had the one loss with 'King Mo,' who tested positive for that fight and it was ruled a no-contest, so he had an undefeated record," Coker said. "And he had such an impressive performance with Robbie. When we talked about it (after the fight), I hadn't had a chance to talk to Sean yet and see what his thoughts were.

"But I feel really good about this fight because Lorenz, to me honestly, is probably the most dangerous striker in MMA right now. He reminds me of a K-1 fighter back in the day with just tremendous kicking ability, good movement, great boxing skills. The guy took it to Robbie pretty good, and that's really what got him the shot with Luke. That's how it turned out."

Most dangerous striker in MMA? That's a bit much. I like the bout, but I still think that Jacare has done a lot more to earn a shot at regaining the title. Coker went onto say that Shelby is talking to Jacare's camp about his next bout. Could it be Roger Gracie? We should find out soon.

The most dangerous strikers don't get knocked out against wrestlers.

I think Larken adds another check to the loss column on this one, I don't like Rockhold but I think he takes this 8 out of 10 fights.

You can be dangerous and fragile at the same time, a bunch of strikers have that tag. Would you say CroCop was dangerous? Rocked with a punch and finish on the ground.

Very true, I find his extremely high opinion of himself quite annoying.

I was a bit on the Lombard hype train ONLY because he called out "The Spider" and wanted to see the match up very badly. I think Lombard could give anybody in the MW a run for their money. He's like the Cuban version of what's his face...Falcao.

What I'm trying to say is fighting in other organizations can be a bit deceiving even to the fighters themselves. I truly believe Lombard believed his own hype, Fedor (legitimate GOAT HW), all Pride/Dream/SF/IFL champs had a very tough transition into the UFC.

IE: Read a two time NCAA tennis champ get slaughtered by a lower ranked pro player on the ATP tour. That's kind of the level when you compare other orgs to the UFC. It's simply that much better.

So while I think Larkin showcased a great fight it's merely marketing.

Coker isn't the brightest spark. This is a guy who thought "well...if I give them Overeem, Diaz, and all the Heavyweight division, then take on Jardine....what could go wrong with that?"

I dont like Coker. He reminds me a bit of a weasely shifty car salesman.

Jacare should have gotten the next title shot, I just don't get Stikeforce's matchmaking sometimes.

...Nope I don't agree with Coker. That probably made him pause and think about the spider. Larkin, no doubt is very good on the feet. Larkin has excellent, crazy kicks & punches--well-rounded striker. As fas as him being the most dangerous? Not by a long shot. I can make a UFC list of fighters that could smoke Larkin on the feet. Larkin had better learn some escapes from the bottom, tightening up an all-around groundgame. This is MMA not K-1. He's not a specialist like JDS who dominates completely with his hands...
