I would normally agree with you but I've read that so many fighters see Lee as an inspiration. If he has inspired so many fighters surely his contribution to the sport is valid?

In all defense to Bruce Lee his Jeet Kun Do philosophy might be considered a precursor to MMA. But you could also argue that for Antonio Inoki's shoot fights and Helio Gracies Vale Tudo fights. My belief is that MMA had several different inspirations, Bruce Lee being one of them.
