Alexander Emelianenko announces retirement
Quote:
Alexander Emelianenko, the younger brother of heavyweight great Fedor Emelianenko, has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts.
In a post that ran on his website and Facebook page, Emelianenko, who went 21-6 in a nine-year career, said he would no longer be able to compete due to "health problems caused by old injuries."
The 31-year-old also thanked both his supporters and detractors for motivating him to succeed, and said he would be focusing more time on his family.
During his heyday, Emelianenko faced some of the sport's top heavyweights, including Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Josh Barnett and Fabricio Werdum. His most significant win came in a 2006 TKO win over Sergei Kharitonov, though he's more fondly remembered for an 11-second knockout of James "The Colossus" Thompson.
Emelianenko was known for quick fights, as he once authored a eight-fight win streak entirely composed of first-round finishes. At another time, he had three straight knockouts of less than 30 seconds apiece.
In recent years, he had become something of a fighting nomad, competing for seven different promotions since the start of 2007. Prior to his retirement, he had competed four straight times for M-1, and in his most recent match, lost via submission to Jeff Monson. Shortly afterward, he was cut by the promotion, reportedly for violating the terms of his contract. But instead of looking elsewhere, Emelianenko will join his brother in retirement.

Alexander Emelianenko, Retires from MMA Competition
Quote:
Aleksander Emelianenko, younger brother of pound-for-pound great Fedor Emelianenko, has called it a career.
The thirty-one-year-old Russian mixed martial artist announced his retirement via his Facebook page, stating injuries sustained over a competitive fight career were the determining factor with regards to his retirement.
Emelianenko went 21-6 during his MMA career and was one of Pride FC’s scarier heavyweights. Winning three in a row in Pride FC, he lost to Josh Barnett in the opening round of the Openweight Grand Prix. Emelinaneko faced off with some of the best fighters in the world, including Barnett, Fabricio Werdum, and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, during his career.
At one point of his career, it was said he would fight with the UFC. Due to medical concerns, which were never actually made public, he never got that opportunity. Many media outlets stated the reason was a positive hepatitis-c test, although that was never 100-percent confirmed by the fighter.
In recent years, Aleksander was unable to find a permanent home and fought wherever the paycheck was. In what was his final fight, he was submitted by Jeff Monson, who was earlier defeated by his older brother Fedor in his last fight. Quite fitting, the Emelianenko brothers finished out their careers with the same opponent, granted with a differing end result.

The Emelianenko brothers are certified bass asses. It's probably for the best that Aleks retires now before the big downward slope happens (as it does for everyone with fight years/injuries).
Best memories were in PRIDE FC.... His grim reaper tattoo, leaving his hands down and dropping vicious bombs!
