Steve Swanson is perhaps best known for being the older, yet less experienced brother of top UFC contender Cub Swanson. He trains at Jackson’s MMA with his brother and other UFC fighters such as Carlos Condit, Donald Cerrone & Clay Guida. After starting his career as a Bantamweight, he made the drop to 125 pounds in 2012, and in his Flyweight debut he submitted Jesse Cruz (6-1) in just 2 minutes. After going to a decision in 3 of his first 4 fights, Swanson has since won 5 straight fights in the first round, including 3 knockouts in less than 30 seconds.

Young American Flyweight Scoggins is perfect in both his professional and amateur MMA career. He made his amateur debut in 2010 as an 18 year old and compiled an impressive 6-0 record, being the Caged Chaos champion. Now 20, he has a 4-0 pro record, with 3 finishes (2 TKO’s & a submission). All 4 fights took place in 2012, and in his most recent fight he won the Invasion flyweight title by getting the first hook kick knockout in MMA history, knocking out Jacob Hebebison (5-2) late in the fight.
Dileno Lopes – 11-0-0 – Brazilian – 24 Years Old - Opponent W/L: 16-7, Last Fought: Nov ‘12
Brazilian fighter Lopes has the most wins on the flyweight list with 11. He started his career back in 2007 as a teenager, and after fighting sporadically his first few years, he has fought 6 times since 2011. He is a submission expert, and has finished 10 of his 11 fights – all by submission (and all by some sort of choke). Some may recognise his name as he competed on the first series of TUF Brazil. Fighting at featherweight - 2 classes above his normal weight, he lost in the qualifying round to eventual winner Rony Jason. His best wins so far are submission wins of Josenaldo Silva (7-2) and Stenio Barbosa (5-1).
Allamurad Karayev – 9-0-0 – Turkmen – 21 Years Old - Opponent W/L: 6-3, Last Fought: Apr ‘12
The lone fighter from Turkmenistan out of the whole 200 fighters, Karayev is also one of the youngest fighters on the list at just 21 years old. Karayev is from a karate background, training in the martial art since he was 9, which shows in his 7 stoppage TKO victories. Karayev has finished all 9 fights, with 7 of them within just 3 minutes, and all of his fights took place in the 7 months between Sep 2011 & Apr 2012. He has faced weak opposition, but there is not much opposition to face in Malaysia!
Marcos Vinicius Sa Freire – 7-0-0 – Brazilian – ?? Years Old - Opponent W/L: 14-6, Last Fought: Nov ‘12
After flying under the radar for much of his career, Freire recently made the flyweight division take notice when he beat one of Brazil’s top Flyweights – in September he submitted the previously unbeaten Claudir Dutkevis (10-0) with a beautiful armbar. In addition to this, he also holds a win over the experienced Janailson Lima (29-8) which gives him one of the top records in the Flyweight division.
Giorgio Andrews – 9-0-0 - English – 35 Years Old - Opponent W/L: 10-15, Last Fought: Aug ‘12
35 year old Andrews is the oldest fighter on this Flyweight list, and he trains out of top English gym London Shootfighters alongside notable fighters such as John Hathaway, Karlos Vemola and Michael Page. He is a kickboxer who has previously won the UK national Kickboxing Championship, and he’s finished 8 of his 9 fights in the very first round. A former Bantamweight, in his most recent fight in August he made the drop to Flyweight and won the UCMMA Flyweight title, winning a Unanimous Decision over Spencer Hewitt (9-2).
Eugene Toquero – 4-0-0 – Filipino – ?? Years Old - Opponent W/L: 9-1, Last Fought: Nov ‘12
Muay Thai specialist Toquero has been tearing through the Flyweight division in the Philippines, winning all 4 fights in 2012. He has finished every fight by TKO with his vicious Muay Thai game, and has fought exclusively for the PXC promotion. In July he handed Victor Torre (6-0) his first loss, and did the same to Team Lakay prospect Jerome Wanawan (3-0) in November, forcing a doctor stoppage in both fights.
Chris Miah – 4-0-0 – English – 20 Years Old - Opponent W/L: 3-5, Last Fought: Nov ‘12
English fighter Chris Miah made the drop to Flyweight in his most recent fight and won the FUK Flyweight title when he submitted Mark Handley (3-5) in just 56 seconds. At 20 years old he is one of the youngest fighters on the Flyweight list, and has finished 3 of his 4 fights by Submission. The former Bantamweight is a jiu-jitsu specialist, and was also 5-0 as an amateur before turning pro.
Jun Nakamura – 6-0-0 – Japanese – 28 Years Old - Opponent W/L: 12-9, Last Fought: Oct ‘12
Nakamura is a Japanese submission specialist who has finished 5 of his 6 fights by submission (4 via armbar); and he is in fact ranked as the #3 grappler in Asia at 125 pounds. The 28 year old is a small Flyweight at 5’4” who could possibly made 115 pounds. He fights for top Japanese promotion Shooto, and both his 2012 wins came over experienced opposition in Kenichi Sawada (7-12) and Katsuya Morofushi (5-5).
Adriano Moraes – 5-0-0 – Brazilian – ?? Years Old - Opponent W/L: 4-2, Last Fought: Sep ‘12
Young Brazilian fighter Moraes is a well rounded fighter, who owns 3 finishes in 5 fights. He trains out of Constrictor team – one of the top gyms in Brazil home to UFC fighters Rani Yahya, Paulo Thiago and Francisco Drinaldo. The man nicknamed ‘Mikinha’ gained the best win of his career recently, when he won a Unanimous Decision over Michael Costa (9-4) at Shooto Brazil.
Bronson Casarez – 4-0-0 - American – ?? Years Old - Opponent W/L: 3-2, Last Fought: Dec ‘12
‘The Casarez Kid’ is an extremely tall flyweight at 5’8”. Casarez had an extensive amateur career where he finished with an impressive 20-3 record. Primarily a Muay Thai fighter, he gained the best win of his young career in 2011 when he needed just 22 seconds to stop Greg Guzman (10-5) and take home the Gladiator Challenge title. His first 3 fights lasted just 2:19, and he went the distance for the first time in his career in December when he won via split decision.
Yamato Okada – 9-0-1 – Japanese – 28 Years Old - Opponent W/L: 5-7, Last Fought: Jul ‘12
Japanese Flyweight Okada is impressively unbeaten in his first 9 fights. After starting his career with 4 stoppages, his last 6 fights have gone to the judges’ scorecards, where he has come out on top each time (with 1 draw). He has fought for a variety of Japanese promotions throughout his career, including Shooto, GCM and Demolition Xigma. At 5’4” Okada is small even for a Flyweight, and would even be better suited to 115 pounds.
Hidenobu Izena – 5-0-1 – Japanese – ?? Years Old - Opponent W/L: 7-12, Last Fought: Sep ‘12
After starting off his career in 2010 with a draw, Izena has since rattled off 5 straight wins. Of the 5 wins, 4 of them have been finishes with 2 Submissions and 2 TKOs. Izena fights for Japanese promotion Rising On, and in 2011 he won their 4-man Flyweight tournament by beating Shota Watanabe (3-6) and Yoshiteru Ueda (2-1).
Travis Wynn – 3-0-0 - American – ?? Years Old - Opponent W/L: 1-1, Last Fought: Aug ‘12
American fighter Travis Wynn was an American Football player in high school, and has transitioned to MMA after getting into wrestling in his senior year. Wynn had an extensive amateur career, during which time he was the champion of 2 different promotions. He fought each of his 3 fights in 2012, and won each fight by unanimous decision. He has not fought very experienced opposition so far, but at 22 years old and with a 3-0 record, this is not surprising.

The 4th and final Japanese fighter on the Flyweight list, Hatta has won each of his first 4 fights. Fighting for the Japanese ZST promotion, Hatta has fought 3 times in the latter half of 2012. He is a submission specialist, and has finished 3 of his 4 fights by submission. Hatta holds wins over Satoshi Ishimori (4-3) and Fumitaka Izuka (3-2).
