Herb gets around as a ref. He's refs for just about everything in North America. From what I understand he's got a real problem with being plagued with injuries, which is why he hasn't been in more fights.
Big John, from my understanding started his own gym, and trains often with the fighters, he just doesn't actually compete.
I think it's good that some of the ref's actually fight though, gives them a better understanding of what to look for.
yeah, Herb refs for several organizations. I have met him a couple times and he says he likes helping smaller organizations because they are the ones that gives more of the average person a chance to get into and fight MMA. He said he fights ocassionally to help a smaller organization attract a crowd. Not that he is a great fighter or anything, but his name is known because of the UFC. I think thats cool of the guy. He really loves the sport and is willing to help the smaller organizations grow making MMA for available to everyone. rep to Herb!

Not doubting Herb's philanthropic spirit, but the more smaller promotions succeed, the more work he gets as a state commisioned ref.
