Ufc, Pride Veteran Gilbert Yvel Announces Retirement After 16-year Career

Definitely in the list of top 20 fighters who never truly realized their potential. He had the inner rage and savagery, but couldn't quite put it together. Still remember the fight against Ben Rothwell where he was beating the crap out of em. THEN Rothwell turns the tide, reverses and beats him into submission. Such is life as a fighter.

Quote:
After 56 professional fights, Gilbert Yvel is retiring.

The 37-year-old Dutchman made the announcement during a recent interview with GnP-TV.

ďIím pretty much done. Iíve been fighting for the last 16 years... Iím here to teach other people. I donít want to punch people anymore,Ē Yvel said. ďIíve been fighting 16 years -- thatís a long time. Iíve had a good run. This is it.Ē

Yvel last competed on March 30, 2012, when he scored a first-round knockout of Houston Alexander at Resurrection Fighting Alliance 2 in Kearney, Neb. Yvel told GnP-TV that more than a year-long absence from the sport since then -- prompted by multiple fight postponements as well as kidney issues -- helped him to reach his decision.

The ďHurricaneĒ has competed for organizations such as the UFC, Pride and Rings over a course of a career that began in 1997, battling many of the sportís biggest names. Yvel was unable to earn a win during a three-fight stint with the UFC in 2010, falling to Junior dos Santos, Ben Rothwell and Jon Madsen before parting ways with the promotion. The muay Thai specialist owns notable victories over the likes of Pedro Rizzo, Akira Shoji, Gary Goodridge, Cheick Kongo, Valentijn Overeem, Semmy Schilt and Fabiano Scherner, to name a few. http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/UFC...r-Career-53591

I won't miss him after that referee KO episode. Farewell, Gilbert.

I wish he made the 205 cut earlier in his career, he didn't look too bad at LHW, especially compared to the chubby HW he was in his UFC stint. In spite of his terrible reputation...a fine fighter.

Well Cro Cop and Fedor would've made good light heavyweights as well but they didn't cut early enough in their careers and at the end they both just called it a career.
