MMA fighter Leandro ‘Feijao’ Souza dies cutting weight

Quote:
Tragedy has struck the MMA community in Brazil, as it was announced yesterday that Nova Uniao fighter, Leandro ‘Feijao’ Souza, died just prior to weighing in for his ‘Shooto 43′ flyweight bout against Gabriel Brasil.
The 26-year-old “Feijao” was suffering from complications with his weigh cut, according to teammate Andre Santos, who spoke with MMA Fighting:
“We don’t have much information yet. but we do know that is related to his weight cut. He’s my student but he also trains at Nova Uniao for about a year. I wasn’t with him during this process because I have a fight scheduled in Russia, so he spent the night at Nova Uniao’s gym. His sister called me saying that he had passed out so I went to the hospital, but he was already dead when I got there.”
Shooto 43 is promoted by André Pederneiras, head coach of Nova Uniao and trainer of UFC champions Jose Aldo and Renan Barao.
Pederneiras made the announcement on Thursday night through his official Facebook page:
“We are sad to report the death of Leandro Caetano de Souza. The athlete has passed away in Botafogo’s UPA. We don’t know the reasons why yet. We would like to express our condolences to all friends and family.”
Is it time for the sport of MMA to try and regulate weight cutting in some form?

Everyone had to see this coming. He probably won't be the last.

I've been against weight cutting since the days when Tito was beating up guys 30lbs smaller than him at fight time.

This is not some mystery that's hard to solve. It's very simple and easy to require fighters to weigh in fully hydrated.

OOps. sorry. I think we are all guilty of not caring about this section of the forum.

Put it in the ufc section and it would have 10 pages by now.

This was reported day before yesterday in a bunch of media outlets, so I figure a lot of people already vented their opinions before it was posted to this forum.

Everybody good, plenty of slaves for my robot colony?

I just read this on sherdog, and was about to post it. Feel horrible for him and his family and friends. But I'mm with you oldfan. I'm anti weight cutting myself, and wish they would have the weigh in the day of the fight. That might help by stopping fighters to dehydrate themselves as much as they currently do.

In boxing they introduced 24 hour weigh ins because same day weigh-ins got too dangerous. You had guys cutting so they could make weight, they would be fighting drained... not just weighing in drained.

You can have the weigh ins any time you want. Just make them do it hydrated.

Urinalysis has been shown to be the most valid and reliable method for determining moderate changes in fluid balance. Here is a method of analyzing urine specific gravity using a refractometer.

purpose: monitoring hydration levels to prevent dehydration is important for optimizing performance. Urine specific gravity is a scientific measure of hydration by measuring the density (concentration) of a urine sample.
equipment required: a refractometer (a simple hand-held version is illustrated here), urine specimen containers for urine collection, distilled water, cleaning cloth / disposable tissues, fridge or ice cooler for urine storage, gloves.
it's not as complicated as people pretend. but there would be a pretty fun and chaotic adjustment period as fighters started fighting at the weight that they live and train.

I know, just saying why we even have the 24 hour period over the same day stuff. I've heard the equipment you mentioned before and i agree it would be a good solution.

Thing is... People are scared of changes. There would be a massive shift in weight classes for nearly everyone currently competing in the UFC. Nobody would be able to make weight, including all the champs (Bar Mighty Mouse and Cain Velasquez obviously).
