MMA fighter dies after fight

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum or has been posted. Mods please delete or move as you see fit.

His name was Booto Guylain and it was in south africa.

I received an email from a friend about this. I googled it to confirm and apparently it happened 5 days ago. It was from an elbow. I actually disagree with elbows on the ground if you can't kick/knee, should be both or just punches imo.

This is the first directly related mma death if I am not mistaken. To me I would think the percentages are still well in mma's favour. Loads more dangerous sports out there. Unfortunately Dana and us mma fans can't use that statistic anymore.

Once again apologies if this is old news. Condolences of course to Booto and his family.

Pretty horrible. Sad day for his family. Sad day for MMA.

Did anyone think the elbows in the last TUF Canada vs Austrailia fight were pretty brutal? I felt like I was watchimg a man be murdered. Ref did an awesome job to stop it as fast as possible because Vik was not holding back.

Sad news. I wonder if the fight should have been stopped or if it was just a freak occurrence.

It's not the first MMA related death though. An American guy who was not medically cleared to fight took an unsanctioned fight in Russia (I think). If I remember correctly he was killed via ground and pound.

I'm pretty sure there have been other deaths.

If that's the case then my mistake. I guess I'm mixing up 'no ufc deaths' with 'no mma deaths'

In that case this topic should be moved to general mma

Was of course wondering what the ramifications for the ufc would be etc

Back to the elbow thing. I didn't see the tuf fight with Vic as I have moved interstate and have no fox yet :-(

But to me it seems the argument for elbows on the ground was for realism. In which case it should include knees and kicks (both harder to land imo). Otherwise lets move towards skill and safety and make it punches only. More chances for submissions and scrambles. More action. Just my 2 cents

It was the Ukraine not Russia

31-year-old Douglas Dedge was an American mixed martial artist who was the first known American competitor to be fatally injured in an MMA fight and the first death in the modern era of MMA. On March 16, 1998 Dedge competed at an unsanctioned "World Super Challenge" event in Kiev, Ukraine. After tapping out to strikes, Dedge stood and almost immediately collapsed back to the mat. Dedge was then taken to the Kiev Institute of Surgery where he died two days later on March 18 of what the chief emergency room doctor termed "severe brain injuries".
Dedge was reported to have passed out during a training session leading up to the bout and it is now widely believed (though never officially confirmed) that Dedge had a preexisting medical condition.
After doing a search there have been a few deaths... according to wiki anyway

The thing that Dana White can still claim is that there have been no deaths in the UFC. Any and all other deaths have taken place in other organizations. Also I'm wondering if this guy had a preexisting condition.
