Please note due to inactivity, TJ Grant is ineligible for the rankings. Also note the previous rankings (7/31/14) in parenthesis:
1. Anthony Pettis (1)
Anthony Pettis has finished coaching The Ultimate Fighter season 20 and will start training for his bout with Gilbert Melendez. Of note is the fact that Pettis will be ineligible for the rankings after today until he defends his title in December.
2. Gilbert Melendez (tied 2)
In typical Gracie Fighter fashion, Gilbert Melendez has said that he doesn’t want to like Anthony Pettis leading up to their fight. It’ll be interesting to see if based on that statement he and Pettis will have an adversarial relationship or not.
3. Khabib Nurmagomedov (5)
Khabib Nurmagomedov maybe sidelined with an injury right now but a loss to Benson Henderson has lifted his profile.
4. Benson Henderson (tied 2)
A well placed punch can lay anyone out and Benson Henderson is no different. Expect him to rebound though sometime soon. It also makes a run for a third title shot with his nemesis Anthony Pettis that much more dramatic should he make it up there.
5. Donald Cerrone (9)
Regardless of whether Donald Cerrone is racist or not, he will be facing former Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez. Of note is the fact that Cerrone recently kind of denied allegations from Bobby Green that he is racist and sexist.
6. Josh Thomson (7)
Josh Thomson may have lost to Bobby Green in a split decision but that certainly doesn’t put him out of the title picture.
7. Rafael dos Anjos (8)
No doubt Rafael dos Anjos’ win over Benson Henderson is his highest profile to date and thrust him into the title picture.
8. Eddie Alvarez (4)
Eddie Alvarez is finally getting his long desired, overdue UFC debut against Donald Cerrone at UFC 178 on September 27th. It is interesting to note that Alvarez currently is not ranked in the UFC Power Rankings, though that should change relatively soon.
9. Bobby Green (N/A)
There is no doubt that Bobby Green‘s win over Josh Thomson is his highest profile to date. He was originally going to face Donald Cerrone at UFC 178 but was passed up and rescheduled for a later date and opponent in favor of Eddie Alvarez.
10. Nate Diaz (6)
Nate Diaz is still sidelined due to a contract dispute, but a meeting with Dana White in coming weeks may clear that up soon.
The following fighters are considered contenders at lightweight: 11) Jim Miller, Will Brooks, Myles Jury, Michael Johnson
