Mirko Cro Cop wins Open Weight Grand Prix... again

Quote:
Ten years after winning the PRIDE Open Weight tournament, 42-year-old Mirko Filipovic captured the Rizin FF Grand Prix Open Weight 2016 crown with two first-round knockout victories in one night and three victories in three days overall.

“Cro Cop” (35-11-2) defeated Amir Aliakbari (4-1) by first-round knockout in the tournament final of Saturday’s online-streamed event at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, completing a run that started with a second-round TKO of Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal on Thursday.

Filipovic opened the final night of the tournament by quickly advancing past the nearly 400-pound Kaido Hoovelson (3-1) for a first-round TKO in just 49 seconds. “Baruto” rushed “Cro Cop” and pressed him against the ropes to open the fight, but then Filipovic unleashed a perfectly placed knee to the body that caused his opponent to back away before falling to the canvas.

Aliakbari had a much more difficult time punching his ticket to the final. He was forced to endure a grueling two-round battle with Valentin Moldavsky (4-1). He won a narrow split decision, but the taxing fight put him at a disadvantage going into the final round.

With the 16-man elimination tournament singled down to two, Filipovic took a patient approach early in the fight. It didn’t take him long to find his range, though, because he lined up series of left hands that caught Aliakbari on the jaw and dropped him to the mat. Filipovic rushed in with a more strikes and the referee quickly jumped in to halt the action at 2:03 of Round 1.

Filipovic celebrated his victory and became emotional while discussing yet another major achievement in his career.

“Thank you for all the support for all three fights I had in Rizin; I can’t explain how happy I am,” Filipovic said in his post-fight speech. “I came to this tournament with a lot of injuries and at the end of the day the belt is here. This was a very special night for me. 10 years later after I won PRIDE Grand Prix. So many memories and feelings are going through me right now.”

Yes in Japan against lesser competition but at 42 winning a Grand Prix like that is still impressive.

Watched it last night. Koo to see Jerome Lebanner give him a standing O. His opponent is a decorated grappler, much younger and bigger. Considering his age it's still a huge feat where all of his contemporaries are getting flattened out. Too bad Wandy didn't make it. I wonder if Crocop and Fedor are gonna meet again. I think Crocop simply feels more comfortable inside a ring.

Maximus: For the glory of the Empire, sire.

We're mentioning "lesser competition" but didn't CroCop have to get past King Mo first to get into the GP? As a decent grappler Mo should've been the nightmare opponent for Mirko in some ways.

Mirko's beaten some seriously good guys in his most recent run. Unbeaten in 7 with 2 wins over Ishii who is an Olympic gold winning Judoka, a win in the UFC over Gonzaga, then 3 KO wins in 3 days over King Mo, a previously unbeaten huge guy in Baruto Kaito and then finishing it off with the very though Amir Aliakbari. He's not been fighting scrubs.

Has announced his retirement following this win too, so what a way to go out! I don't think that'll be the end, I still think his final fight will be against Fedor, but we shall see. If that is it, it's the perfect way for a legend of the sport to go out.

If everyone's on the juice, then what does it matter that he is?
