Terrible MMA Injury

Texas MMA Fighter Clings to Life Weeks After Bout

Quote:
Sam Vasquez, who last fought at the October 20th Renegades Extreme Fighting event in Houston, is still at the St. Joseph's Hospital ICU, The No Holds Barred Show has learned.

Revolution Dojo's Vasquez, who was stopped by Vince Libardi in the third and final round of their fight, collapsed when he tried to get back up after Libardi stunned him with a straight right.

Updates posted by Sandra Vasquez indicate that the fighter is still in serious condition. Two clots formed in his brain after he was admitted to the hospital. He is on a respirator and as of last Friday, he has suffered a massive stroke. Visitors are being admitted to his room and bedside.
This is awful. You just hate to hear about things like this. MMA is a dangerous sport, everyone knows that going in, but you still don't expect this. For those of you who are religious, pray for the guy and his family. Everyone else, just keep him in your thoughts. Only the best for Sammy, I really hope he recovers.

I dont understand the point of NHB when you have properly conducted and sanctioned orgs with pretty much the same rules out there.

Theres really too many people to blame. You can blame the ref or his corner for not noticing the signs sooner, or you can blame the dude himself for continuing despite possibly knowing he was hurt.

From what I've heard he wasn't getting beaten badly, nothing out of the ordinary to be sure. It could just be an accumulation thing from training, who knows?

I heard he was improving and showed signs of response until he suffered the stroke. Hopefully he can recover from it. All the best to Sam and his family, this is an awful thing to have happen.

Maybe he has rare hereditary form of thrombophilia, which is a general term for too much clotting. If that is the case, then u cant really blame anybody. Too damn much clotting and the big punch broke one of the clots and it went to his brain. Stuff like that is gonna happen once in a great while. It is inevitable.

He was actually released from hospital yesterday. It was pretty quiet though. All kinds of news when a fighter suffers a life threatening injury, but barely any when he recovers?

Its because he isn't recovered...he was released, yes. But to a hospice. Thats not good news. Its probably so he can live out the rest of his time in peace...

I didn't read that about him going into hospice, I only saw that he was out of hospital. That really sucks.

Sam Vasquez is in an area hospice after being discharged Monday from a local hospital.

Two independent sources told Sherdog.com on Friday that Vasquez, 35, relocated following his release from Saint Joseph Medical Center, where the featherweight was rushed after Vince Libardi stopped him on a Renegades Extreme Fighting card at the Toyota Center on Oct. 20.

"It does not look good for him," said one source, asking not to be identified.

After taking rapid combinations and a hard right punch to the chin in the third round, Vasquez dropped. The referee allowed Vasquez to stand again, but he collapsed and the bout was called.

Eight minutes passed while Texas Boxing and Wrestling Program-mandated EMTs attended to the fallen Vasquez, who was eventually placed onto a stretcher and supported with a neck brace. His exit from the arena to downtown's Saint Joseph Medical Center was marked with a slight, occasional seizure visible to the cage-side audience.

Vasquez's hospital stay was first complicated by what doctors called a large "acute clot" that formed within the brain and required surgery on Nov. 4 to relieve pressure. A second clot formed soon afterwards, requiring another invasive procedure.

Vasquez's doctor called this occurrence "rare." Also, notably, the first clot was not a result of the initial injury Vasquez suffered, said his wife, Sandra.

The father of one was listed in critical condition and put in a medically induced comatose state. On Nov. 9 he suffered a massive stroke, and his family contacted LifeGift, an organ donation center.

Steve Bruno, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, said the state has no plans at this time for any sort of moratorium on mixed martial arts.
