Phil Baroni signed to multi-year deal!

Outspoken middleweight fighter Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni (10-8) has signed a non-exclusive, multi-year deal with EliteXC.

ProElite, Inc., the parent company of EliteXC, today made the announcement.

Baroni will make his EliteXC debut at the organization’s March 15 event, which is co-promoted by ICON Sport, according to today’s press release. EliteXC has not yet named an opponent for the 31-year-old fighter.

Additionally, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, though EliteXC confirmed that Baroni will be allowed to continue fighting for Strikeforce, with whom he’s currently signed to a multi-fight deal.

“You know any Jersey boy like me likes a New York badass, and Phil’s definitely as bad as they come,“EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw stated in today’s press release. “Phil is a promoter’s dream. He’s a character but also as courageous a fighter as I’ve been around.

“But what I truly love about him is he always comes not only to fight but to win and put on a show. He’s a crowd-pleaser extraordinaire.“

Baroni, a former UFC and PRIDE fighter, most recently suffered a second-round submission to rival Frank Shamrock at a June 2007 Strikeforce/EliteXC show. In a drug test administered by the California State Athletic Commission, the Long Island native tested positive for Boldenone and Stanozolol steroid Metabolites. He was fined $2,500 and suspended a year. Baroni denied taking banned substances and filed an appealed. The CSAC later reduced the suspension to six months.

“I’m looking forward to returning to the cage and kicking (butt),” said Baroni. “Everybody knows I got hurt early and couldn’t do everything I wanted to do against Shamrock. But I’m 100 percent now, ready for anybody. I pity the guy I fight next or the one after that. Trust me; everybody is going to pay from here on out.“

Baroni could eventually challenge EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler, who defeated Murilo “Ninja” Rua for the title in September.

He's fighting Kala Kolohe Hose for the vacant ICON Sport Middleweight title on March 15th. Robbie Lawler was stripped of his ICON Sport MW title earlier today due to inactivity because of an injury. Lawler will still retain his EliteXC MW title though.

I was so confused about all that. I knew he had both belts, but the article I read didnt mention his Elite Mw title. Thanks. repped.

No problem. It's been almost 11 months since he won the ICON belt from Frank Trigg. ICON Sport had delayed 2 or 3 entire events because the fight with Hose was going to be such a big draw in Hawaii. They couldn't wait any longer and decided to strip him of the title.

Lawler beat Ninja Rua for the EliteXC belt in September, so he still has time to recover and defend that belt. It's the more important belt of the two anyway. I'd love to see a match between Lawler and the winner of F. Shamrock/Cung Le, so they can unify the EliteXC and Strikeforce MW titles.
