Haye Showing Interest in MMA
Apr 11, 2008 3:28 PM John Chandler

English boxer David Haye, who currently holds three of the four major cruiserweight titles, has expressed his interest in entering the world of mixed martial arts after he turns 30-years-old.

Haye recently made the remarks to the Southwark News.

“You know, I’ve been boxing since the age of 10 years old, 20 years in the game is enough for me,” Haye said in the article. “But what I’d like to do then, I’d like to challenge whoever’s regarded as the number one mixed martial arts fighter.”

Haye also went on to say that he had trained in some martial arts - karate, judo, and jiu-jitsu, not a bad base if I do say so myself. Obviously Haye likely hasn’t trained enough to make any kind of immediate impact in the sport just yet but he’s better off than a Ray Mercer type that wants to give MMA a shot.

What intrigues me the most about the potential of Haye entering the fray though is his striking, and not because he’s a boxer. Anyone that’s seen Haye fight more than once has noticed that he isn’t the most technical of strikers.

His punches are sometimes unorthodox and lacking a defensive response for what his opponent is about to throw, but in MMA, his style would be extremely effective in my opinion. Couple that with the fact that the man has some definite power and a few good years of training with a solid team could certainly make things interesting.

More talent would always be a good thing. Though it sounds like he expects to cruise in.

Don't know much about him however from the sounds of it he seems like he could be good.

Good finds mlsman. I think it would a good idea for Haye to enter mma. I say that because I would be watching it but seriously, boxers put on good shows in mma. You know how everyone is looking for the knock out. Champion caliber stand up is a great way to start mma.

I've seen most of his fights and he does have an unorthodox style for boxing that could transfer over to mma pretty well.
