Barnett vs. Monson for Sengoku II and Card

Quote:
American heavyweights and former UFC fighters Josh Barnett (21-5) and Jeff Monson (24-7) will meet May 18 at World Victory Road's second-ever show, "Sengoku II."

The Japanese-based organization made the announcement earlier today.

The organization added Barnett to the card on Monday, and Monson was confirmed as his opponent early Thursday.

Barnett, a former UFC heavyweight champion and longtime PRIDE fighter, competed at the first Sengoku event and defeated Hidehiko Yoshida in March. It was his sixth win in his past eight fights; the only losses came to Antonio Rodrigo Noueira and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic.

Monson, a former UFC heavyweight contender, won 16 consecutive fights to earn a title shot against then-champ Tim Sylvia at UFC 65. He suffered a unanimous-decision loss to his much-bigger opponent and hasn't fought for the UFC since then. He last fought at a December Plainum Fighting Productions event in the Phillipines and defeated Hakim Goram via unanimous decision.

The latest Sengoku II card, according to the official World Victory Road website, now includes:

Kwang Hee Lee vs. Eiji Mitsuoka
Satoru Kitaoka vs. Ian Schaffa
Jorge Santiago vs. Yuki Sasaki
Yoshihiro Nakao vs. Jim York
Dan Hornbuckle vs. Mike Pyle
Ryo Kawamura vs. Kevin Randleman
Josh Barnett vs. Jeff Monson
Roger Gracie vs. TBA

I think Barnett has this easy as his striking it a little better. I am also wondering who they will throw at Roger Gracie. If this is already floating around then I apologize but I only saw Barnett was fighting but not who he was set to fight.

This should defiantly be fun. I'm really eixted to see this thing hit the ground. I'm sure Barnett will win but Monson doesn't really get schooled on the ground by anyone.

I'm all exicteed for this card with this fight and Roger Gracie on it.

I actually got Monson in this one, I think he will find away to submit Barnett, Monson's ground game has always been top notch and seeing as he has alot of fights lined up I imagine he has been training hard. Barnett has been pretty inactive since the demise of Pride and I think if Monson is training hard he can pull off a major upset here.

IDK Toxi Nog couldn't sub him in 40 minutes. I'm not sure if Monson can do it in 15 (They only have 5 minute rounds in WVR right?)

I like this fight, and I'm going with Josh Barnett. in the past, both have shown to have solid boxing, but I think Barnett's stand-up is a little more crisp. Like in the first Nogueira fight, Barnett showed some really nice stand-up and managed to drop Nog. I think Barnett will take this by decision, since Monson's a tough guy to finish, and I just don't see Barnett subbing him.

Barnett by UD. I highly doubt he'll finish Monson by (T)KO or Sub, but I do see Barnett being in control for the entire fight. I would much rather see Barnett vs Aleks II, but whatever.

This is true I mean its not like Barnett in inept on the ground in his own right, but I just question how serious Barnett has taken his training since Pride died, I mean when he fought Nog he was still fighting multiple times a year and then has been inactive since the Nog fight other than one fight against an opponant of questionable caliber.

I got the BFA in this one. Should be a fun fight even if it hits the mat. i don't see it as a boring stalemate like Monson/Cruz. The BFA will make it exciting on the ground if it goes there. I don't see either guy subbing the other. If it stays standing I give the edge to Josh as well.
