I don't think Gomi's ever really been in a boring fight. Well, post-BJ Penn whomping Gomi, that is. The guy's really exciting to watch, he likes to punch a fool in the face and he likes to be punched in the face. His defense sucks, but hey, I still love watching the guy. His fights with Azeredo were great, and he whomps a fool really well.
Gomi has an annoying face. Yeah, I said it, his face is punch-y material, but he makes up for it by welcoming people to hit him and he also likes to feed dudes leather.
Gomi can be an unmotivated turd sometimes, which makes him very frustrating to watch. I'm convinced that he just wanted to drink a lot of beer and go to strip clubs while in Vegas. It seemed like he didn't even train a full day. Oh well, I bet he had fun playing blackjack and downing Heineken's.
My top 5 favorite Gomi fights.
1. Takanori Gomi vs Luiz Azeredo 2 (Bushido 10).
Word to this, this was an awesome fight and a FOTYC for 05. Azeredo is always game, and Gomi punches him in the face a lot here. In fact, he knocked out one of Azeredo's teeth in this fight, but Azeredo didn't care. Hell, he smiled, that's how manly he is. Pretty competitive fight, and it showed that Gomi can pretty much accomplish anything once he motivates himself.
2. vs Kawajiri (Bushido 10).
Probably Gomi's best performance, as he smoked a great fighter with ease. Kawajiri got whomped. He got whomped, badly. Gomi just killed him, and he choked him out, which made it even more awesome. Kawajiri's a tough guy to catch in a sub, but a motivated Gomi did it. Of course, he pounded the hell out of him before he slapped it on. Bas Rutten nearly creams his pants, hell, he probably did, because he was in love with the brutality.
3. vs Pulver (Shockwave 2004).
Great stand-up fight, even though Pulver was outweighed. Gomi was all, "Sure, I'll stand with you and eat punches" and he did, and it was awesome. Pulver hit him so many times.
4. vs Sakurai (Pride Shockwave 2005).
Great, great, GREAT performance from Gomi, who capitalizes on a stupid mistake by Sakurai. He gets his back and pounds him, then he brutally knocks his head off standing. It was truly something special.
5. vs Ishida (Shockwave 2006).
I love me a good whomping, and this was a good, hilarious whomping. I remember many complaining about Gomi not wanting to touch gloves at the beginning of the fight, and I just laughed. Why should Gomi let his guard down? So what that he didn't want to tap gloves? Of course, Gomi made it even more awesome by knocking Ishida on his ass and brutally whomping him.
There are others, like his second fight with Aurelio (Where Gomi fights smart and uses leg-kicks really well), but those are my favorites. He is a whomper. He's a total whomper, and that's awesome.
