The Takanori Gomi Appreciation Thread.

I don't think Gomi's ever really been in a boring fight. Well, post-BJ Penn whomping Gomi, that is. The guy's really exciting to watch, he likes to punch a fool in the face and he likes to be punched in the face. His defense sucks, but hey, I still love watching the guy. His fights with Azeredo were great, and he whomps a fool really well.

Gomi has an annoying face. Yeah, I said it, his face is punch-y material, but he makes up for it by welcoming people to hit him and he also likes to feed dudes leather.

Gomi can be an unmotivated turd sometimes, which makes him very frustrating to watch. I'm convinced that he just wanted to drink a lot of beer and go to strip clubs while in Vegas. It seemed like he didn't even train a full day. Oh well, I bet he had fun playing blackjack and downing Heineken's.

My top 5 favorite Gomi fights.

1. Takanori Gomi vs Luiz Azeredo 2 (Bushido 10).

Word to this, this was an awesome fight and a FOTYC for 05. Azeredo is always game, and Gomi punches him in the face a lot here. In fact, he knocked out one of Azeredo's teeth in this fight, but Azeredo didn't care. Hell, he smiled, that's how manly he is. Pretty competitive fight, and it showed that Gomi can pretty much accomplish anything once he motivates himself.

2. vs Kawajiri (Bushido 10).

Probably Gomi's best performance, as he smoked a great fighter with ease. Kawajiri got whomped. He got whomped, badly. Gomi just killed him, and he choked him out, which made it even more awesome. Kawajiri's a tough guy to catch in a sub, but a motivated Gomi did it. Of course, he pounded the hell out of him before he slapped it on. Bas Rutten nearly creams his pants, hell, he probably did, because he was in love with the brutality.

3. vs Pulver (Shockwave 2004).

Great stand-up fight, even though Pulver was outweighed. Gomi was all, "Sure, I'll stand with you and eat punches" and he did, and it was awesome. Pulver hit him so many times.

4. vs Sakurai (Pride Shockwave 2005).

Great, great, GREAT performance from Gomi, who capitalizes on a stupid mistake by Sakurai. He gets his back and pounds him, then he brutally knocks his head off standing. It was truly something special.

5. vs Ishida (Shockwave 2006).

I love me a good whomping, and this was a good, hilarious whomping. I remember many complaining about Gomi not wanting to touch gloves at the beginning of the fight, and I just laughed. Why should Gomi let his guard down? So what that he didn't want to tap gloves? Of course, Gomi made it even more awesome by knocking Ishida on his ass and brutally whomping him.

There are others, like his second fight with Aurelio (Where Gomi fights smart and uses leg-kicks really well), but those are my favorites. He is a whomper. He's a total whomper, and that's awesome.

Discuss.

My 3rd favourite fighter ever probably. His beatdown of Kawajiri was my favourite, with those brutal bodyshots. He also has the greatest HL ever on youtube, the one with "tough boy" by the Tomcats.
Gomi is like some anime superhero to me.

I also liked when that midget headkicked him in shooto, and there was the 10 count thing, and Gomi not only got up before it een hit 3, he even picked up a pen or somethng the ref dropped. It ruled.

I honestly believe him to be the no. 1 LW in the world aswell, I just wish he'd train his ass off and be in DREAM/UFC to prove it.

At one time he was my favorite fighter on the planet. He's still easily in my top 10 favorites. His fight with Kawajiri was my favorite of his. The final two minutes of that fight is pure spectacular ass whoopin! His fight against Jens Pulver was a seriously sweet boxing match.

You never know which Gomi you are going to get. The explosive Gomi that obliterated Ishida's face in a matter of a microsecond or the out of shape Drunken Style Kung Fu Gomi from the Nick Diaz fight. The fact is that you can never, ever, [Y2J]Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever[/Y2J] count the guy out because he has nuclear bombs inside of his gloves. I am fully convinced that Gomi could KTFO many heavyweights.

Seeing him briefly at the "Mach" Sakurai vs. David Baron Shooto fight recently gave me hope as he was rockin' a seriously sweet and shaggy beard. That says to me "I wanna knock somebody's head off their shoulders so bad that I didn't even bother to shave or even trim the beard" or "I'm going to need to change my look really quickly after I commit murder in the ring and have to flee the country"

Either way it has me excited! Long live the Fireball Kid!

Oh my God, Damone, you're the man for starting this thread.

Gomi is my favorite LW apart from the great Genki Sudo of course but still, I am seriously in love with Gomi.

I loved his fights with Azeredo, his GP run, his recent fight with Ludwig, hell I enjoyed every single one of his fights.

I would love to see Gomi fight Penn again and I'd still pick Gomi.

Gomi has the skills to be the #1 LW fighter, he just needs to set his mind to it.

A motivated Gomi is a great fighter, and the more I think about it, the more I think a motivated Gomi could defeat Penn in a rematch. Maybe I'm being biased here, but the Gomi that fought Penn the first time was definitely not the Gomi who killed Kawajiri & Sakurai. Given Penn's piss poor cardio, Gomi could take it in the later rounds. I definitely agree that he has the tools to be number 1. a JZ vs Gomi fight would be awesome. Someone would probably die.

I need to see Gomi's shaggy beard. I wonder how it holds up to Ken's sideburns.

Damone there is a link to the fight here http://www.mmaforum.com/dream/35585-...tml#post537030
We get a glimpse of Gomi right at the beginning.

Also I agree that Gomi vs. JZ would be pure sweet delicious fireworks!

I like this thread a lot. Gomi is definitely my favourite lightweight. The dude has some serious skill when he chooses to turn them on, and some of the best footwork I've ever seen.

Oh, and I agree completely with your fight picks, Damone.

I really like shaggy Gomi. Gomi's way too pretty, he needs some ugliness in his life, and this makes him look less like a little girl and more like a manly man. Don't get me wrong, Gomi's a manly man alright.

Azeredo vs Gomi 1 from Bushido 7 was a fun fight. Azeredo was kicking Gomi's ass in the beginning, but Gomi went all crazy on his crazy ass.

Gomi really was the Bushido king, and I love all of his Bushido fights except the first Aurelio fight, where Aurelio made him his beyotch and stuff. Their second fight is pretty underrated.

You know what, Aoki vs Gomi would be interesting.
