I've used some training called H.I.T. (High Interval Training) that I did to stay in shape during wrestling. It helped quite a bit. It's basically the principle of a short but intense workout. What I would do is run for 20-25 minutes either outside or on a treadmill. For the first five minutes I would try to steadily increase my heart rate to probably about 130 at 7 1/2 mph. Then after five minutes I would sprint for two minutes at 10 mph and go back down to 7 1/2 for one minute. I focused on deep breathing during this 7 1/2 minutes. I would go in this cycle 5 times so I sprinted a total of 10 minutes with the 7 1/2 in between. By the end my heart rate would be around 170. Then I would cool down for about a minute at a very slow speed. It's intense but beneficial for cardio plus you don't have to have marathon workouts. Also you can just go at speeds that get your heart rate at a good pace not necessarily my exact numbers.
