EDIT: Also, it's like that with every sport. Fans change quite often.
Yeah, it's the exact same thing with bands as it iswith fighters!
I like Coheed since SSTB, way before Emos got their hands on them and gayed them up.
Luckily, fighters seem to go out of fashion as quickly as bands do, so I get to be one of the few Shogun/Coheed fans about now again

I know, I guess it is like that with a lot of sports, MMA just seems much worse.

I think it's the hero status people give their fighters. They put them up on mad pedestals thinking they're invincible, overlooking weaknesses. Then when they get beaten, they're no longer the fighter they thought they were etc. It's the fans that can't handle the fact that people aren't robots. Everyone has their hard times sooner or later. The ones that don't are the ones that should be put on a pedestal once their reign is over & then it's history.

Anyone who's been into this sport for any length of time should know that freak upsets do happen from time to time.

I think in Shogun's case, I stopped really caring when he went out of fighting for one year or more. Like BAM and you don't hear anything about the guy at ALL. Strangely enough, the same thing didn't happen with WAND... Maybe cause he has such exiting fight I could watch in the meantime...

when a fighter becomes really popular i start to like him less alot of the time, like im disliking machida not for his fighting but all the nuthugging, same with bj and AS, its just the way some people go on about them and i almost want them to loose so i can shove it in there face

Fans are very fickle in most sports although it does seem to be more prominent in MMA. Like right before his UFC 71 fight with Rampage, Chuck Liddell was referred to as if he were the Second Coming of Jesus or something. I actually remember a thread titled: "How many bears (or something) could Liddell KO?" and although it was intended as a joke there were actually a few people who were convinced he'd be able to actually KO a 1000lb + polar bear
Fast forward to after the Rampage fight and especially the Jardine fight and suddenly Liddell is a one-dimensional fighter who has a 'questionable chin', is too old and should retire.

I notice a lot of changes(at least in some people's mind) right after a big card has finished- if GSP, BJ or A. Silva fights everyone is clamoring to call them the best pound for pound fighter and then the multiple "if they fought who would win?" threads. There is normally at least one fight that has people arguing back and forth over the stoppage(I'm totally guilty there- see Vera/Werdum thread).

There's also normally an upset or a fighter that not many have heard of that does well and then some people are fighting to jump on the bandwagon until they lose in their next fight. Houston Alexander went from unstoppable wrecking machine to washed up/weak chin/no ground game in 4 fights- that I don't think even the total fight time was more than 1 round for all 4 fights.

This is a phenomenon of being a young sport. In a young, relatively undeveloped sport like MMA you can see big changes occur very quickly. In something like Baseball/Hockey/Soccer/Football that have been around forever it is very unlikely that someone is going to come along and revolutionize things. MMA is still at that stage where that happens occassionally. MMA has come a long way but it is still an infant in terms of development and perfection of the athletes.

I was/still am a HUGE fan of Anderson Silva. Anderson Silva was my Top3 favorite fighter when I first joined this site and I've been a huge fan since his days long before the UFC. After he won the title and such, he gained more and more fans and lots of them happened to be the people that jumped on his bandwagon.

Honestly, I love Anderson Silva but I'm pretty quiet about my Andy Silva love because of how his bandwagoning nuthuggers portray their support.
