Greatest Single Years In MMA History

Another thread about the first half of Josh Barnett's year got me thinking about if he manages to beat Arlovski, then get a match with Fedor and beat him too. If that were to play out, we would be witness to one of, or possibly the greatest single years had by a fighter in MMA history.

So my question to you is:

What are some of the greatest years had by a fighter thus far in MMA history?

Some of the ones I thought of off the top of my head (and others with a little help from the fight finder) are:

Shogun's '05
Fedor's '04
Big Nog's '01 & '02
Don Frye's '96 (He lost to Coleman, but fought 11 times that year and won 10 of them)

Anyways let's hear your thoughts on some of the best years of all-time.

Damn, good thread, hope this doesn't get overlooked.

2000: Kazushi Sakuraba: Beat Mezger (As lame as it was, it's still a win), made Royce quit (Back when Royce was seen as unbeatable), subbed Renzo and smoked Ryan Gracie.

1999: Frank Shamrock. Had 2 fights, but 2 fights against solid opponents, and he shouldn't have gotten a draw in the Tamura one, since I thought he beat him. He finished Tito back when Tito was becoming quite the fighter, demolishing solid guys like Bohlander and Mezger. Also, Frank Shamrock was the most well-rounded fighter at that time.

1998: Frank Shamrock. Showed his dominance as champion, destroyed Igor Zinoviev in sickening fashion, beat Horn in a solid showing and smoked Lober.

1997: Maurice Smith. He beat the Hammer in a great fight, back when Coleman was THE MAN! He then beat Tank back when Tank didn't really suck. He became the first black UFC champion during that time period and had a pretty close fight against Couture (A fight in which all Randy did was lay on Mo).

As for 04, I think I'm going with BJ Penn. Penn fought at higher weight classes and beat guys like Hughes and Rodrigo Gracie, not to mention he smoked Bang Ludwig.

That truly did suck.

Gomi had a pretty awesome '05 beating Mach, Kawajiri and Azeredo(sp?) twice. He looked awesome that year.

Couture 2003 - went from HW to LHW and destroyed Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz(outstriked Chuck, ground'n'pounded Tito lol). He was an underdog in both fights and just to mention, he was 40.

I'm not saying it is one of the best in MMA history but I was just looking at his record while I discovered this thread and Fitch had a solid year last year beating: Fioravanti, Carneiro, and Sanchez. I will look for more.

Ortiz

You know what I realized about all those fights is that they were all rematches.

Big Nogueira in 2002 - won 5 fights inside the distance, including submissions over Sapp, Schilt and Henderson.

I got to give some props to Hayato Sakurai in 1999-2000. Basically up until the Anderson Silva fight.

Nice input guys, there are some years in there I never would've thought of.

Another one I thought of was Wandy's 2003. Sakuraba, Yoshida and Rampage.

Also, bad decisions aside, Hendo's 2000. Wins over Big Nog, Gilbert Yvel and Babalu and a loss but pretty solid performance against Wandy.
