Jake Shields vs John Alessio Elite XC fight slated for September 20

"Jake Shields vs John Alessio Elite XC fight slated for September 20
By: MMAmania

Elite XC Welterweight Champion Jake Shields (21-4–1) will put his newly-won 170-pound title on the line for the first time ever against John Alessio (23-11) at “The Pit” at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M., on September 20.

MMAmania.com was able to confirm the match up with a source close to the fight negotiations.

Shields – widely regarded as the top welterweight in the world not fighting in the UFC – recently won the inaugural division title for the promotion when he essentially ran through a very tough Nick Thompson at Elite XC: “Unfinished Business” last month.

The Cesar Gracie-trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu standout is on a blistering 10-fight win streak, racking up impressive wins against top-level talent such as Mike Pyle, Renato Verissimo, Yushin Okami, Carlos Condit and others.

Perhaps most impressive is that he’s been able to improve fight after fight, finishing his last five opponents – something that was a knock on him midway through in his blossoming career.

His opponent, John Alessio, most recently slapped a rear naked choke on former UFC competitor, Pete Spratt, in the second round of their fight with Banner Promotions: “Night of Combat” on June 20.

“The Natural” sustained a broken arm in the fight, however, it appears that everything must be all good if he’s able to take a title fight exactly three months later.

Alessio – who owns a winless record (0-3) inside the Octagon against some pretty stiff competition (Pat Miletich, Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves) — put together a solid record (5-2) in the WEC with his only losses coming to division champion, Carlos Condit (submission), and former number one contender, Brock Larson, by way of disqualification.

Looks like a title defense and number 11 in a row for Shields.

This is a bad first fight for Alessio. Shields is gonna steamroll him.

Kinda like when David "The Crow" Loiseau had his first EliteXC fight against Joe Villasenor.

The only difference is I don't see this one going to a decision. Shields should finish him by the second round.

Damn it, where the hell is Drew Fickett?!

John Alessio: I'm not facing Jake Shields at Sept. 20 EliteXC event
by John Morgan on Aug 14, 2008 at 4:05 pm ET
Despite recent reports of EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields (21-4-1) defending his title on EliteXC's Sept. 20 card against John Alessio (23-11), the potential challenger today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) he will not be ready in time for the Albuquerque, N.M. event.

Alessio was recently forced to take time off from training after suffering a broken arm in a June victory over veteran Pete Spratt. Now the Xtreme Couture fighter feels it imperative to allow ample time for a full recovery.

"Sept. 20 is the date [EliteXC] brought up (for a bout with Shields), and that's just too soon for my arm," Alessio said. "I had surgery on [my arm] three days after the fight (with Spratt). I had a cast on it for a little while. Now I'm out of it, and I'm back in training.

"But I had to take five weeks off. Getting ready for a five-round fight by Sept. 20 is too much."

Not that Alessio wouldn't relish the opportunity to face Shields.

"I'm a hundred percent in to fight Shields," Alessio said. "I just need a little bit longer. If EliteXC can make it happen on the Oct. 4 show, then it's a go. I just don't know what EliteXC's plan is."

Additionally, though ongoing rumors have been circling for weeks that Alessio's signing with EliteXC was a done deal, the 29-year-old said the contract is not yet official.

"I signed [the contract]," Alessio said. "I just don't think we've handed it in. I think my managers are holding on to it to wait to find out what's going on.

"To be honest, I'm not one hundred percent sure. We're still talking as far as I know."

Despite the questions currently surrounding the bout, Alessio is hopeful a deal can soon be reached.

"I hope [EliteXC] can make it happen Oct. 4 because then I'm in," Alessio said. "It would be a big honor to fight for the EliteXC title -- especially against such a great champion.

"It could be a fun fight."
