Shamrock's Redemption: Talks Kimbo & Rogers

Friday, August 29, 2008 - by Damon Martin -

Since the announcement was made that Kimbo Slice would make his return to action on Oct. 4 in the third edition of the CBS-EliteXC Saturday Night Fights series, fans and critics alike have been clamoring to find out whom his opponent would be.

It was decided earlier this week that Ultimate Fighting Championship Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock would fill those duties to step in and face the Internet sensation.

But the immediate question turned from the match-up between Kimbo and Shamrock to what did the embattled leader of the Lionís Den do to deserve a fight against Kimbo?

ďI think Iíve paid my dues to be able to get in there and be able to have something thrown my way every now and then,Ē said Shamrock during an appearance on MMAWeekly Radio on Wednesday. ďTo those people that say that (I donít deserve the fight) those are short timers, and the ones that havenít really followed the career of MMA to know the guys that have been here a very long time and fighting when there was no money. To now get an opportunity to fight and make some money.Ē

Shamrock puts it clearly on his experience and sacrifice as to why he was offered the opportunity to face Kimbo in such a high profile fight. A career that has spanned over 15 years in the sport and with that time he feels his body has helped him earn this fight.

ďIíve got a shoulder I had to replace, Iíve got a knee I had to replace, Iíve got a few broken bones in my feet and my hands,Ē he commented. ďA bunch of stitches and all of that is attributed to the time Iíve put into the UFC and the times Iíve put into MMA.

ďMe and a bunch of others have stepped in and made it possible. We went through all the trials and tribulations of them trying to close it down, and calling us animals and fought for practically nothing at one time because we love the sport.Ē

Among Shamrockís detractors about his placement in this fight is EliteXC heavyweight Brett Rogers, who has a history with Kimbo following his last fight in May. He had choice words for the former UFC champion because he was getting the fight that Rogers believed he deserved.

ďSome guys in the fight world are saying that I stepped in front of them or this and that, and hey I didnít do nothing, but train and be a part of the history of the UFC, and the history of MMA and it got offered to me,Ē said Shamrock very bluntly. ďTell me any jabroni that wouldnít take it if it got offered to them.Ē

Shamrock also directly addressed the reason he is in this fight and not Brett Rogers.

ďTo me itís ridiculous because when youíve got people that are talking like that who donít know the source, donít know how things get started, theyíre just flapping their jaws. You have know idea why this fight happened,Ē he commented. ďThis fight is happening because the organization needs a good fight, they need something to go out there and sell tickets and draw people in.

ďAnd unfortunately, for (Brett Rogers), heís not there yet. He will be someday, but heís not there right now. Fortunately for me, Iíve put in my dues. Iíve been in this for a very long time. Iíve sold my body to MMA, all of my body parts Iíve left in the ring. I think I deserve to get in there and get some redemption.Ē

First off the absolute best part of this article is Ken's use of the word "jabroni"- when was the last time you heard it? Love it.

Anyway- cash-wise I can see why Ken wants to take this fight and pride-wise this guy would fight until he's 75- claim the young punks in the sport owe he a shot and proceed to his head practically knocked out his shoulders. He talks about replacing a shoulder and a knee I think he needs to do one better and replace his head. Don't get me wrong- keep the sideburns just replace everything else.

How will Ken get redemption from this fight- okay he wins by dropping to the ground and getting Kimbo in a leg lock- does that do anything for his career. Would that redeem his previous 5 losses or the fact that he is 2-8 in his last fights with breath-taking wins over Kimo and Sam Adkins?

Worse case- Kimbo KOs Ken quickly(which is what I think will happen)- then you have the same image you've seen of Ken lately- a battered bloody old man looking to regain his senses. Kimbo will probably get to put the last nail in Ken's fighting career coffin- Ken's legacy(what's left of it) will take another hit and this time by a internet sensation on live TV.

That ain't redemption it's honestly just sad.

I mean seriously I do respect the stripes that Ken has earned. But this fight is a gimme. If Ken doesn't realize it, than he has taken too many to the dome and it's not his fault.
