Overanalyzing an Opponent?

To what extent should a fighter study his opponent? I'm curious this because someone made a post about it in a thread on sherdog with a video of AA watching (what it looks like a whole list of Fedor's fights) and taking notes.

I mean is it better to just get a general idea of the other's game plan and their biggest weakness and go in the fight and roll with it or should a fighter study intricate details of all aspects?
