MMA as an Olympic sport?
There are many combat sports in the olympics such as Boxing, Judo, Fencing and so on. Obviously not as brutal as the others but as any MMA fan knows the spirit of compitetion and it's beauty can't be denied forever...
Imagine; the 2012 summer games in London. Canadas Georges "Rush" St-Pierre takes on Japans Takanori "Fire ball kid" Gomi for the welterweight Gold medal... (I can dream can I)
The summer Olympics last a little less then a month so training for a match will be very different. How would you administer fights for the Olympics?
Maybe 1 fight a week for three weeks tournament style? With the winner advancing to the next round. The try-outs would be awsome as well; Team America with Matt Hughes and Nick Dias and Josh Koscheck as alternates. Team Brazil, Team Canada, Team Japan and so forth...
The day MMA arrives; it will be an Olympic sport, Chuck Liddell Gatorade commercials. Fighters standings in the morning paper. ESPN early sunday segments before football, with highlights from saturdays UFC fights the night before.
MMA will truly arrive one day to compete with big boys like American Football and Baseball in ratings, fighter contracts and big time sponsors.
