UFC vs Pride FC - 2003

Ok can someone explain a few things for me?? Not that it really matters now being 2009 but im just currious.

Im watching this video on youtube and Chuck Liddel and Rampage fought in Pride?? Chuck Liddel is wearing a UFC jersey like he is representing the UFC. Meanwhile Rampage is dissing the UFC saying it "Aint shit" lol. This video isn't in english but I watched one awhile ago and Dana white was commentating saying that Chuck wasn't following the gameplan etc etc.

So what was the deal with this?? UFC vs Pride and why weren't there more UFC fighters involved like Tito, Couture etc etc. This must have been exciting when it happened I don't fully understand what was going on though the thought of Dana White co promoting makes me laugh.

Help me out here I feel like im missing a big peice of MMA history is this what lead up to Zuffa buying Pride FC?

EDIT: Heres the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNnmSXttoQo

That was back when Dana actually didn't mind co-promoting because the UFC was not nearly has big and successful as it is now. Chuck had actually fought there before- beating Guy Mezger- but he entered the Grand Prix in hopes that he would eventually match up with Wand but Rampage messed that all up after Chuck had beaten Alistair Overeem in the 1st round.

Even after that Pride duped Dana into bringing Wand for a post-fight hype up after one of Chuck's title defenses(can't remember exactly which one) for a supposed fight(that's where Wand announced that he wanted to f#ck Chuck) but Pride just wanted to use that for marketing.

That was just at time when the UFC was trying to grow and now that they see themselves as the biggest and the best they don't don't to co-promote as it would the other orgs. more than theirs.

Pride wasn't all about co-promoting, but wasnt against it as much as the UFC is these days with their exclusive contracts.

I'm sure there was a bunch of money that was handed over to Pride to let the UFC posterboy (chuck at the time) enter their grand prix. It wouldve looked real bad if chuck won it all.

What I dont get was back then, when Pride was the big show, dana was hootin and hollerin about Japanese promotions that did not want co-promote events. Now that the UFC is the big dog, he doesnt allow any non-contracted fighters in his shows all with no exceptions.

Im just wondering if this was a one time thing only because the video I saw that was in english not this one Dana said things along the lines of "this is a horrible start for us" and "Hopefully next time".

So I was just wondering if any other UFC stars fought in a Pride tournament representing the UFC or if this was the only time.

Dana just finally agreed to do the co promoting.

Pride was the top dog back then by a mile, so it was just Dana trying to get some publicity.

I remember seeing something on this at one time that Lidell went to Pride to fight in the GP in return Pride was supposed to loan out Wandy to the UFC, this led to Wanderlei appearing to challenge Chuck in the octagon but after this Pride negated on the agreement and never followed through by allowing Silva to fight Chuck. Dana has also stated that he felt screwed over by the way Pride handled the early attempts at cross promoting.
