Ground and pound is part of the sport!!

Im really starting to get irritated when people say all fighters do is lay on people or call it "lay n gay" Some fighters do Lnp but saying people like Matt Hughes or Tito Ortiz does it is ridiculous. They are great ground and pound fighters. I personally would rather watch a boring fight on the ground than a boring fight standing. Even if you dont like gnp you cant say it is cheap or stupid. It is just as big a part of MMA as striking or BJJ. If someone cant stop someones Gnp they dont deserve to win. If a GnPer needs nothing more than Gnp to win he deserves to win.

I think "lay and pray"(can some1 explain to me wtf that refers to..pray??) has its place, its just a strategy to recover. A lot of people get mixed up between it and gnp, thats all. U cant constantly strike when ur on top, for millions of reasons, including punching out, getting armbarred etc. They are a lot of fighters that do lay and pray, but its not the same as the top fighters u mentionned.

(by the way, did u just rate ur own thread 5 stars? )

I think all one dimensional fighters get a bad rap these days except for Lidell. I think fans are now expecting to see more well rounded fighters employing all facets of the game. As the sport and fighters evolve so does the fans.

GnP is a huge part of the sport, but i have a problem with blankets who lay on top of a guy, peppering their opponent with shots untill the times up, hoping for a decision. watch old Kerr fights, watch young Coleman, and mostly, watch Fedor right now!!! all supreme examples of guys taking people to the ground, controlling them, and hurting them into either tapping from strikes, or beating them half to death until they get KO'd from inside the mount!!!

GnP is great, when applied by someone powerful, and skillful enough to make it exciting, and not a snoozefest!

downward strikes with your fist, and laying dead weight on your opponent to keep him there do not a GnP fighter make!

whiskey, racism, money, grease, twinkie's, guns.....yep lol thats about it

I guess I have missed these posts you mentioned, but I mentioned something in a Sylvia thread earlier about how styles make fights. If a GnP guy gets a striker on the ground he is going to spend some time doing the lay n pray. You just cannot throw down from on top for 5-10 solid minutes. Even Fedor stops for 10-20 seconds between his pounding flurries. Hating on GnP fighters is flat out ridiculous. Hate on the guys who suck at it & mostly lay n pray, don't hate on the tactic. The most dominant modern MMA fighter, the Babe Ruth of fighting, is a GnP fighter known as Fedor Emelianenko.

the "pray" in lay n' pray refers to the guy's praying for a decision!

I dont like watching Matt Hammil or the old Rashad (he was good against Lambert) I think that is lnp and its cheap. It just seems like people are starting to hate on all gnp fighters, with the exception of Fedor.
