It seems like Dan Henderson gets very little respect. He is hardly mentioned in pound for pound or even in the rankings for his own weight division. MMAWeekly has him ranked as #6 among 185 lbs. fighters. #6
? He is #1 on my list at 185, however I'm a Dan Henderson fanboy so you have to take that with a grain of salt. I could see him at #2 or as low as #3, but #6? This is the man who just thoroughly dominated a juiced up Vitor Belfort who is also a bigger fighter. Granted you never know what you will get with Vitor, sometimes he's unstoppable, other times he doesn't have his head in the fight. This time around I don't think it was a case of Vitor not bringing his A game however. I think Dan just controlled him throughout the match and didn't allow Vitor to muster any offense. That's what great fighters do, they take their opponent out of their game plan and into their world.
The 5 fighters listed above Dan Henderson are: Matt Linland, Anderson Silva, Paul Filho, Kazuo Misaki, and Rich Franklin. I believe Dan would thoroughly beat up Paul, Kazuo, and Rich. Matt Linland and Anderson Silva would be great, close fights for Dan, but I believe he would prevail there too.
Dan is a great all-around fighter. He is a world-class wrestler, superb with both controlling an opponent in the clinch and the dirty-boxing. Great take-downs, good take-down defense/reversal. He probably won't submit an opponent, but he knows enough, is smart enough, and has been around long enough to avoid submissions quite well(except against the Nogueiras, but those guys are submission wizards). As a striker he is very good. Good technique, defense, combos, and a deadly right hand. My one knock on Dan is that because he is so intelligent he knows when he is ahead in a fight and has a tendency to sometimes coast through the rest of a fight rather than try to finish an opponent.
