Roger Gracie Joins Strikeforce

Big news, and I'm very, very excited about it.

However, I have long been hoping that a major Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter will appear in a major western promotion, so I have an excuse to talk about the nuances of the ground game and just generally to see the awesome level of jiu-jitsu produced by the creme of the crop of the pure grappling circuit.

Roger Gracie and Strikeforce (fast becoming one of my favorite promotions, as they continue to impress me with their pick-ups) have made that dream come much closer to being true . While Roger, who apparently suffered a serious injury last year that kept him from returning to MMA, has been out of the cage for almost a year (it’ll be a full year on monday), since submitting Yuki Kondo in 2:40 with a rear naked choke.

Thoughts?

Awesone news and great write-up as usual. He's young and if he works on his striking, I'm sure he'll become a force in the Strikeforce's HW division.

From Walker's thread, this is the current Strikeforce HW roster:

Alistair Overeem (Champion)
Paul Buentello
Brett Rogers
Fabricio Werdum
Shane Del Rosario
Rex Richards
Bob Sapp
Tank Abbott
Levar Johnson

Affliction's HWs could be added to this list as well.

Yeah, I think Abongo Humphrey is worth mentioning too (he's gone the longest with Rogers and, frankly, I found his performance against Brett pretty impressive).

Obviously, they won't bring the disgraced Antonio Silva in for a little while. His suspension's not over until the end of July, I think. Still, he's a warrior, steroids or not, and I'd like to see Bigfoot in that division.

Also, it's Lavar Johnson. Strikeforce had it spelled wrong on their website for a really long time (they took forever responding to my note about it, though they fixed the mistake on Kim no-longer-Couture's record the next day).

Excellent addition, these guys are getting better every day.

HW is begining to look solid in Strikeforce.

I wonder if Strikeforce will keep him in the feeder promotion long enough for him to get some more experience. It'd be a shame for them to rush him only to have him get smashed by the more experienced fighters.

I don't think he'll fight in the ShoMMA up-and-comers' promotion, but I don't think they'll give him anyone serious right away.

If Lavar beats Seufmanutafa, which I think he should, maybe he'll fight Roger.

They could bring Roger in to fight Richards or Del Rosario (though I think Rosaria might be a threat, given that he hits so hard).

The truth is, if Roger can get any fight to the mat, he's going to win, and I think that there are only a few guys he'd have trouble taking down:

Alistair Overeem
Fabricio Werdum
and that's it.

Frankly, I'd love to see Roger tapout Bob Sapp, but since Sapp is really a superheavyweight, that's probably not going to happen.

I'm thinking that the likely opponents for a Roger Gracie debut are Johnson, Richards or Buentello, and those are all guys Roger can beat.
