2010 could be the year of Nick Diaz

There's no one like Nick Diaz in mixed martial arts. If you were ranking fighters purely on well-roundedness, the 26-year-old Diaz is probably top five in the sport. But you also have to mix in results and his dedication to the sport. Sometimes Diaz is only dedicated to what rattles around in his crazy head. He's had multiple run-ins with the athletic commission in California and his failure to show for his tests in August probably cost him two fights to close 2009. The drama could just be delaying his rise into the top 10 pound-for-pound or maybe it's a sign of things to come for guy who may never reach his potential.

Remember the wrestler "Unpredictable" Johnny Rodz? That's Diaz. One second he was bitching about getting Marius Zaromskis instead of Hayato Sakurai. Diaz claims Sakurai was ducking meanwhile Diaz wasn't responsible enough to control his extra-curricular habits in order to make it to the cage anyway.

On the flip side, he made a lot of sense when talking about why he's winning now and couldn't put together a lengthy win streak in the UFC.
"I didn't understand the sport," Diaz said of fighting in his early 20's. "I was going in there trying to do more damage. These guys were going in there trying to win a certain way. I became a little more conscious of what not to do. Not get taken down. Something kind of clicked in there. I feel like that's gonna happened with anybody. It's experience."

When he flopped out of the August event Showtime's Ken Hershman sounded like he was just about done with Diaz.
Well now he's the headliner on Strikeforce's Jan. 30 card in Sunrise, Fla. That's if he makes it the cage. He's back and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker had him sit down with the media during the Dec. 19 postfight.

I think that Nick Diaz is a tremendous fighter. I also think that he will win the vacant WW title and defend it well!

Nick Diaz is an awesome fighter an always entertaining to watch. But I don't think that people will ever call him one of the greatest MMA fighters ever because he doesn't have the discipline and focus to be the best. He will always lose his concentration at some point, same with his brother Nate!

Unhappy Concentration

I don't think that is the reason why he is going to loose to Zamarius but that's just me!

I think he is gonna handle Zaromski without to much of a problem and I dont see any welterweight outside of the UFC beating him at this point in his career. The dudes stand up has gotten pretty damn good lately and he has one of the better ground games around. He is one of the most active fighters both standing and when his fights hit the mat. I think this will be a big year for him if he keeps his head on straight.

I'll probably catch a lot of flaming for this since Diaz is such a fan favorite, but he's really not that great. Remember when EliteXC made the LW at 160 for Diaz when he fought Noons? That was supposed to be Diaz' division back then too. But he failed to do anything. Then he moves up to MW and beats Scott Smith (mediocre on the ground) and Frank Shamrock (WAYYYYYY out of his prime) and all of a sudden he's the next big thing at WW? I'm not hopping on this hype train. It seems that this train boards every once in a while and it always ends the same. Granted, I do believe he can beat Zaromskis, but Marius has yet to have been tested. So sorry guys, but he's just good. But not great.

Scott Smith (mediocre on the ground)
Did you watch that fight? I don't remember it going to the ground at all. It was a stand up one way beating. Smith is known as a power hitter with a strong heart and good chin, and Diaz absolutely destroyed him on the feet. I mean he was playing with him the way Anderson Silva plays with supposed strikers.

Not to say he's the next best thing, but he's certainly one of strikeforce's best fighters. If he was in the UFC I would put him ahead of a lot of the top ten WW's. But he's poor man's version of (the old) BJ Penn, lots of potiential, not enough work ethic.
