Strikeforce: Los Angeles

Full card with tiny prelims:

* Robbie Lawler vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral (195-pound catchweight fight)
* Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos vs. Marius Zaramoskis
* Tim Kennedy vs. Trevor Prangley
* Conor Heun vs. K.J. Noons

* R.J. Clifford vs. Jeremy Umphries
* Marcus Kowal vs. Hugo Sandoval

Takes place on June 16th... a Wednesday.

Two weeks after Strikeforce officials first announced their intentions to hold a rare mid-week fight card in Los Angeles, the promotion has now released the first three fighters that will appear at the event.

Bobby Lashley, Robbie Lawler and K.J. Noons will all fight on the Showtime-broadcast portion of "Strikeforce: Los Angeles," which takes place on Wednesday, June 16, at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Opponents for all three fighters will be named at a later date.

Pre-sale tickets for the event go on sale Thursday, April 29, while the public on sale date is set for Saturday, May 1.

The 7,100-seat Nokia Theatre is a popular destination for national music acts and awards shows.

The date was selected in order to coincide with the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), a popular trade show for the computer and video-game industries. The conference provides a platform for promoting Electronic Arts' MMA title, EA Sports MMA. Strikeforce will make a major appearance in the video game as the "premier league" in which fighters compete.

The game is expected to hit shelves in late 2010 as a competitor to the bestselling "UFC Undisputed" franchise that THQ and the UFC launched in 2009.

Lashley (5-0 MMA, 1-0 SF) fights for the second time under the Strikeforce banner. The former collegiate wrestling champion and WWE star made his debut in January and earned a first-round victory over an out-of-shape Wes Sims. The muscular Lashley has earned four of his five career wins by first-round stoppage.

Lawler (19-5 MMA, 1-1 SF) returns to the Strikeforce cage after a thrilling first-round knockout win over Melvin Manheof at January's "Strikeforce: Miami." Lawler absorbed a series of punishing low kicks in the fight and appeared destined to fall victim to the Dutch striker's powerful attacks, but a well-timed counter-attack left Manhoef sprawled on the canvas.

Noons (8-2 MMA, 0-0 SF), the first and only EliteXC lightweight champion, fights for the first time for Strikeforce. Noons took a 21-month break from MMA competition and focused on a professional boxing career, though he returned in March and earned a unanimous decision over Brazilian Andre Amade in a DREAM.13 contest.

First Lashley had to drop out, now Krazy Horse:

Former EliteXC lightweight champion K.J. Noons will not get a chance to avenge his loss to Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett just yet, as Bennett was forced out of their bout for unknown reasons.

Stepping in for Bennett as Noons' new opponent will be Eddie Bravo trained fighter, Conor Heun. News of the change was first reported by

Noons' bout with Bennett was slated to take place at the Strikeforce and M-1 Global: "Fedor vs. Werdum" event on June 26 in San Jose, California. However, Noons will instead face Heun on the televised portion of Strikeforce: "Los Angeles" on June 16 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

Noons (8-2) will be making his Strikeforce debut after signing with the promotion last November. He most recently defeated Andre Amade at DREAM 13 in March. It was his first MMA fight since June 2008, as he put together a nearly perfect 4-1 boxing record during his time away from MMA.

Heun (8-3) hasn't fought since losing to UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel at Strikeforce Challengers 2 last June. Prior to the loss, he won three straight fights, which included a 2-0 mark under the now-defunct Pro Elite banner, scoring wins over Marlon Matias and James Edson Berto.

Heun has been competing professionally since May 2006, while fighting for other notable promotions such as Total Fighting Alliance and IFL. He has scored stoppages in six of his eight career wins including five by submission.

Strikeforce: "Los Angeles" is headlined by a 195-pound catchweight bout between Robbie Lawler and Renato "Babalu" Sobral. Other bouts featured on the main card include a welterweight bout between Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos and Marius Zaromskis as well as a middleweight contest between Tim Kennedy and Trevor Prangley.

Dear Strikeforce,

If you announced actual opponents instead of TBA's, more people may be inclined to buy tickets ahead of time, and your card may generate actual interest.

Just a thought. I'm looking out for ya. I like your upstart promotion niche and all, but let's get it together. Huh?

Also -- Put Amoussou vs Prangley on the card, and I'll be there.

AGREED! But it would most likely end up on a challengers card .

I'd also go if Lawler's TBA ends up being Amoussou...

They should just give him a rematch against Miller.

Edit, Nvmd: they are giving the match to Babalu who needed a new show after DREAM called the tourney off on him:

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Renato "Babalu" Sobral (35-8 MMA, 1-1 SF) got a new ticket to ride.

In the wake of DREAM's canceled light heavyweight tournament, the submission specialist and one-time UFC contender will face Robbie Lawler in a 195-pound catchweight fight at "Strikeforce: Los Angeles." The news was first reported Thursday afternoon by and subsequently confirmed by ( via sources close to the event.

Strikeforce: Los Angeles takes place June 16 at the Nokia Theatre and coincides with the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), a popular trade show for the computer and video-game industries.

Lawler was previously expected to headline the summer event against Jason "Mayhem" Miller. But Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told that Miller's participation on the card was unlikely due to a post-event brawl at "Strikeforce: Nashville" that erupted after the "Bully Beatdown" host called out the promotion's middleweight champion, Jake Shields.

The Tennessee Athletic Commission is currently investigating the incident.

Sobral was one of three Strikeforce fighters expected to participate in DREAM's 8-man tournament at DREAM.14 on May 29. But the tournament was recently nixed when the Japanese promotion's television partner, Tokyo Broadcasting System, showed little interest in airing the contest. Sobral's opponent was never announced.

Earlier today, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said the marooned fighters – which include former light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi and Rameau Thierry Sokodjou – could fight for his promotion in June or in non-tournament bouts on the May 29 card.

Mousasi is the only fighter who appears to be put out by the shake up. Sources tell that Sokodjou is likely to fight May 15 in an unnamed MMA tournament in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Sobral, for one, is on the books for a stateside fight, though his representatives could not be reached for confirmation.

The Brazilian-born fighter has not fought since he relinquished his 205-pound belt to Mousasi in a sixty-second knockout loss at "Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg" this past August.

Sobral returned to the gym early this year after focusing on family duties.

If Mayhem is at risk of suspension I think Nick is guaranteed to get one.

Cant embed article as im a nincompoop and retarded

Basically Miller is possibly going to get suspended for his in cage antics ant the last Strikeforce event and they got Babalu in as a replacement against Robbie Lawler.

I got Babalu via sub rnd 2.

I take it it's a light-heavyweight match up. All props to Lawlor if he can pull it off but I'm sure Sobral will bring his A-game as to avoid another loss.
