I think the first step to forcing Dana White to finally accept fights with outside promotions and fighters would be the formation of a fighters union that would force Dana to either start having non-exclusive contracts and to copromote or else he wouldn't have any fighters!

I'd like to see a fighter's union, but I don't think it would have ANY affect on co-promotion or allowing fighters to fight outside of the UFC.

A fighter's union would help guarantee fighter salaries and insurance and possibly pensions for the fighters. But they wouldn't have any power at making the UFC share profits with other organizations. The only way to do that would be if a legitimate fighter's owned league came about to compete.

Pro sports are generally not professions that need unions. Highly paid, highly skilled workers don't need unions. Low paid cogs in a wheel need unions.

At this point in MMA's development a union actually wouldn't be a bad thing (for the fighters) because the low and even mid level guys really don't get paid much considering the risks and costs they take on. All it takes is a couple of the fighters to really push for one, especially if a couple high profile guys got behind it.

There are lots of reasons why professional athletes benefit from unions. Just look at MLB and the NFL to see how much they've gained.

The most obvious perk is that the fighters can negotiate for a higher percentage of the gross income the sport brings in.

Boxing, NFL, NHL those are all established sports which is a large part of why they get paid more. Besides how many football or hockey players make a million a game?
