Josh "The Punk" Thompson VS JZ Cavalcante

Quote:
Fighting in enemy territory is nothing new for Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante after years of fighting in Japan, but now the American Top Team fighter will step into a similar situation as he faces Josh Thomson in his hometown of San Jose on Oct 9 as the two lightweights are set to square off in Strikeforce.
The bout was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Wednesday by Cavalcante's manager, Alex Davis, who spoke with MMAWeekly Radio about the match-up.
"It's a very good fight, I think it's a great fight for JZ," Davis said about the fight.
Cavalcante (15-3-1) comes to Strikeforce after defeating Katsunori Kikuno in his last fight in July for Dream. It was a long road back for the Brazilian who had to deal with several injuries to his knee before coming back.
Previously ranked as a top five lightweight, Cavalcante hopes to re-earn that placement in the division and it starts with his October bout against former Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson.
"For JZ, it's important to come fight on American soil. He's done very, very well in Japan, he came off some injuries and took some losses because he fought not at 100%. He took a tough fight recently, he played it safe and he won, and now he's going to fight Josh Thomson," Davis stated. "I expect him to do very, very well."
After suffering injured ribs in his last fight but still managing to get a submission win, Josh Thomson (17-3) looks to build on that win as he gets closer to the top of the lightweight division again. Thomson lost the Strikeforce lightweight belt to Gilbert Melendez in December 2009, and has vowed to remain active as he gets back to title contention.
Thomson spoke to MMAWeekly Radio last week and said that Strikeforce officials had approached him about fighting in Dream, but he opted to stay at home fight on the October 9 card instead. He will get his wish and a fight with a very tough opponent.
The bout between Thomson and Cavalcante will be part of the main televised card for Oct 9 in San Jose, headlined by welterweight champion Nick Diaz defending his belt against K.J. Noons.
