Drew Fickett Destroys Competition In LW Grand Prix

Drew Fickett submits trio of opponents to win Shine Fights Grand Prix

Fans of MMA are likely familiar with Drew Fickett’s name for a plethora of reasons. The 30-year old has experienced a number of notable highs and lows in the sport, including wins over Josh Koscheck, Kurt Pellegrino, and Ken Florian earlier in his career to arrests, bizarre post-fight antics, and professional disputes with a variety of promotions.
Friday night Fickett gave the public another reason to remember his name, winning Shine Fights controversial eight-man, single-evening tournament with a series of submissions over opponents Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett, Dennis Bermudez, and finally Carlos Prater. The wins improved Fickett’s overall record to 40-13 and could mark a turnaround in his career. Prior to the victories, Fickett had dropped seven of his previous ten bouts but won in April over MMA veteran Derrick Noble meaning he’s officially on a four-fight streak in the right direction. Fickett was also the only Shine Fights competitor to finish an adversary, let alone more than one of them.
Prater advanced in the tournament after Rich Crunkilton was unable to compete in the semi-final though he defeated Prater via split decision in the night’s opening round. The Brazilian-by-way-of-Texas then fought another alternate, Charlie Brown, who took the place of Kyle Baker (also injured in an opening round split decision victory). Prater out-pointed Brown to advance to the card’s main event where he eventually fell to Fickett by way of Rear-Naked Choke a few minutes into the match-up.

I watched this Grand Prix.... I was most impressed with the way he dispatched Bermudez... Bermudez was looking pretty tough. Undefeated, trains with Uriah Faber..

Drew RNCed him in the first round like they were sparring...

And the Guillatine that he put Bennett in was the one of the most beautiful guillatine finsihes I've seen since Almeidas..

Yea I had Fickett winning this one by a long shot. But prior to Aureilo's "injury" I had Aurelio winning it or at least him and Fickett meeting in the Finals.

Ahh but if it doesn't you're stuck on the bottem mounted and wrapped with a submission locked in..

He did shake that armbar though, that was entertaining.

Well it total, Fickett fought a total of 9 minutes and 29 seconds so it worked out his time. I think they should limit their tournaments to just two fights from here on out with the same round requirements. That is why the CSAC sanctioned Strikeforce's middleweight tournament and why the ASAC sanctioned the women's tournament with shortened rounds!

smittyssports has a little shameless behaviour in the past
This tournament turned out pretty good considering the problems they had setting up the event
