Strikeforce: HENDO VS SOBRAL in DEC

Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu
Date: Dec 04, 2010
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
Venue: Scottrade Center
Broadcast: Showtime

* Dan Henderson vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral
* Paul Daley vs. Scott Smith
* Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Lindland
* Antonio Silva vs. Mike Kyle

* Jesse Finney vs. TBA
* Fernando Bettega vs. Wayne Phillips
* Justin Lawrence vs. Max Martytniouk
* Terrell Brown vs. Patrick Cummins

Renato “Babalu” Sobral asked for it and he’s going to get it... a fight with UFC and Pride veteran Dan Henderson that is. confirmed with multiple sources that the bout will take place on Dec. 4 when the promotion returns to the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. first reported the bout.

After Sobral defeated Robbie Lawler at a Strikeforce show in June in Los Angeles, he was asked if he would fight Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal, who happens to be one of his training partners. King Mo held the Strikeforce light heavyweight title at the time.

"I won't never punch and try to hurt my friends, but I would like to ask for a fight, and all the respect that I have, in the beginning of my career I fought Dan Henderson in Japan and lost to him," said Sobral, referring to the finals of the Rings King of Kings tournament.

The victory was Henderson’s third of the night. It also marked the Brazilian’s first loss as a professional fighter.

"I don't want to disrespect, but I would like to fight him. It's going to be 11 years since I fought him. It's a long time, and please, it would be an honor to fight him again, to have the chance to fight Dan Henderson," said Sobral.

Each fighter has gone on to greater glory since they first fought in 1999. Sobral (36-8) has held both the Strikeforce and IFC light heavyweight belts, while Henderson (25-8) held both the 185-pound and 205-pound divisional titles for Pride Fighting Championships.

They are expected to headline the Dec. 4 card on Showtime, which sources say will also feature the return of former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL star Herschel Walker.

The 48-year-old Walker made his mixed martial arts debut at Strikeforce: Miami in January of this year, defeating Greg Nagy midway through the final round. An opponent for Walker has yet to be finalized.
Sweet, I was hoping Dan fought before the end of the year but I'm guessing he'll be fighting at 205 for this fight.

1. BJ "The Prodigy" Penn
2. Dan "Hollywood" Henderson
3. George "Rush" St Pierre

There's also a Scott Smith welterweight fight against Paul Daley on this Strikeforce card:

Scott Smith (17-7 MMA, 3-2 SF) just got an upgrade in opponent.

After an initial agreement to face up-and-comer Jesse Finney, Smith has now been tapped to meet recent Strikeforce acquisition Paul Daley (25-9-2 MMA, 0-0 SF) at "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu."

The event takes place Dec. 4 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. Strikeforce officials today announced the change in plans.

Smith, of course, is making his debut as a welterweight after serving the bulk of his professional career at middleweight. The heavy-handed former steel worker is on the mend after a disappointing TKO loss to Cung Le in June at "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum." Le, a former middleweight champion, avenged a TKO loss to Smith six months prior at "Strikeforce: Evolution."

Smith is now 3-2 in Strikeforce since the promotion acquired his contract in the fallout of EliteXC's closure in late 2008. He unsuccessfully vied for the now-defunct promotion's middleweight belt in a pair of electrifying bouts with Robbie Lawler. An inadvertent eye poke ended the pair's first bout, but Lawler came back strong to win a second-round TKO.

Still, "Hands of Steel" has one of the most exciting highlight reels in the game with come-from-behind KOs of Pete Smith, Benji Radach and Le.

Daley, meanwhile, is on a two-fight win streak after his dispatch of veteran Jorge Masvidal earlier this month in regional powerhouse Shark Fights.

The brash, heavy-handed Brit is doing it his way after a post-fight suckerpunch of Josh Koscheck at UFC 113 got him booted from the octagon (Koscheck outwrestled him en route to a unanimous decision, which served as the catalyst for his cheap shot). He was later suspended 30 days for the infraction, though the punishment did not impede his fight schedule.

Daley is 7-2 since a short stint in EliteXC with five stoppage victories due to strikes.

Not exactly a selling point. The Hendo vs Babalu fight is very interesting. Hopefully it answers questions. Can Hendo still hang with a top fighter? Can Babalu finally get a win over a major name in the sport on the big stage? Hendo is a huge name but hasn't won a fight over a ranked fighter since Pride. Babalu is that guy that always hangs around the #10-12 spot in the rankings. He has a win over Shougn that few people saw. His biggest fights on the biggest stages haven't gone his way. Either way someone is going to prove themselves worthy of the divisions elite and maybe a shot at Feiajo.

Sounds like a good fight.
Babalu will wnat to make it a grappling match, Hendo will hunt him with his big right.
No way Babalu can win the stand-up. And wrestling wise: advantage Henderson. If he tags Bablu, game over.
I'm picking Henderson by TKO atm.
