Great night of Kickboxing and MMA action!
Last night UnitedGlory kicked of the first GLORY Kickbox & MMA World Series event in the Passenger Terminal, in Amsterdam Holland. In these tournaments the best fighters of the world fight for the prestigious Kickboxing and MMA titles. Besides the tournaments there were several superfights. The event was hosted by none other then Bas ‘El Guapo’ Rutten, who was on a very tight schedule, and together with his old ‘Pride buddy’ Mauro Ranallo they commented the fights.
In the Netherlands there has been a lot of fuss about fight events in the capital city. The mayor of Amsterdam has said he intends to prohibit events like these, because of the possible involvement of criminals in the organization and the suspicion that these events are used by criminals, as network organizations. Multiple fighters, including Strikeforce Champion Marloes Coenen, have given their objections in the ring when interviewed by ring speaker Bas Rutten. Nonetheless the Glory event took place as planned and it was a great night of K-1 and MMA action in an excellent ambience!
After the preliminary fights, in which Sylvana Pruymboom won her fight, a super fight took place between Robert Jocz and Hracho Darpinyan. In Holland Polish fighter Jocz is a well-known and respected fighter. Last year he lost a decision fight to current Shooto champion Siyar Bahdurzada. Hracho on the other hand hails out of Team Schreiber – trains with UFC fighter Stefan Struve – and is relatively unknown to the Dutch crowd. However, Hracho maybe known for the great grappling skills he showcased against UFC fighter Amir Sadollah; Hracho won twice. The fight against Jocz was a fast one! Hracho showed he has more skills then just grappling skills as he knocked out Jocz in just a matter of minutes in the first round! Excellent fight by the Team Schreiber fighter.
The second MMA tournamentfight saw American Top Team fighter Roan Carneiro take on fellow Brazilian Luis Ramos. Both fighters showcased their ground skills and in the end Roan Carneiro takes the judges decision.
UFC veteran John Alessio fought a tournament MMA fight against Russian fighter Sergey Golyaev who holds a notable win over Takanori Gomi! A great fight between these two fighters, with brutal takedowns by John Alessio who dominates the first round. In the second round it is Alessio who secures a solid north south position and attempts to finish the fight with a kimura. Sergey delivers two knees to the top of the head of Alessio and this is not allowed. Right after he receives a warning, it is John Alessio who applies the kimura successfully. Winner by submission John Alessio!
All the seats in The Passenger Terminal are filled and in the crowd there are famous fighters like Peter Aerts and teammate Jerome Lebanner chatting with guests. Other famous Dutch celebrities are enjoying themselves as the waitresses are filling up the glasses and serving food. The stunning ring girls are dancing on stage as fighters come out. This is truly an excellent night out!
Robin van Roosmalen takes on Maxim Vorovski in a K-1 rules fight. The winner of this fight will earn a spot in the K-1 Max. Van Roosmalen dominates this fight, however in the first round it is Vorovski who makes a lot of combinations, but he just doesn’t connect. Van Roosmalen wins this fight by decision. Great fight!
In the next Kickboxing tournament fight, Mourad Bouzidi takes on Anderson ‘Braddock’ Silva. The winner of the tournament receives $150.000,-, so the fighters are well motivated to make it trough to the second round of this tournament. Mourad scores the most points in this battle and the judges don’t need to see this fight go to an extra round; Mourad wins the fight and is one step closer to the grand finale!
Frenchman Brice Guidon fights out of Amsterdam, where he trains at Mejiro Gym. One of his cornermen is Jerome Lebanner. Guidon holds notable wins over Mourad Bouzidi and K-1 fighter Hesdy Gerges. His opponent tonight is Filip Verlinden (Belgium). Guidon is putting pressure on Verlinden throughout the fight and every time Verlinden is trying to connect, Guidon prevents so by using is jabs. Brice Guidon winner by judges decision.
K-1 veteran Stefan Leko has fought twice this year, winning both fights; one by decision and one by way of knock out. Tonight he faces fellow Dutchman Wendell Roche, in another tournament fight. In the second round of the fight Stefan Leko suddenly gives up. It is unclear why he is unable to continue, but it seems he is somehow hurt, as Wendell moves on in the tournament.
And then the moment we have all been waiting for, K-1 superstar Gokhan Saki makes his way to the ring. He is smiling and enjoying himself as he enters the ring with his Golden Glory entourage. The crowd goes wild! What can you say about the fight? Well, the Turkish Dutch fighter is lightning quick with his combinations and the low kicks are landing one by one. It is a miracle that his opponent, the relatively unknown Nikolaj Falin, made it through the second round. In the third round Gokhan must have thought ‘I’ve had enough of this, it’s time to sit with my friends in the crowd’ and just demolishes his opponent. Winner by way of technical knockout, Gokhan Saki.
Another fight that has been highly anticipated by the Dutch crowd, is the fight between Nieky Holzken and Murthel Groenhart. At the weigh in the fighters squared off and Murthel refused to shake the hand of Holzken afterwards, who was visibly irritated by this. Needles to say, there is no love lost between these two. Holzken who comes of a knockout loss in his last fight against Aussi, starts of tentatively as so does Groenhart. However Holzken is chasing his opponent. In the second and third round they speed it up a little and although it seems as if Groenhart makes more combinations, not al of those combinations come through. The judges decide there will be an extra round. Nieky Holzken wins this fight by judges decision. A wise saying by the coach Cor Hemmers of Golden Glory (this applies by GG fighters as well as their opponents or any fighter), never complain to the judges or referee, if it was a close fight, if you want to take away any doubts: knock your opponent out!
Shooto world champion Siyar Bahadurzada recently signed a contract with the Strikeforce organization. This night he faced Derrick Noble. This turns out to be an easy win for the Dutch Afghan, who had to lose 25(!) pounds for this fight, as he knocks Noble down with a straight right and follows up with a fury of punches. Bahadurzada advances to the next round.
And then the final match of the evening; Tommy Depret vs David Bielheden. Bielheden is a BJJ blackbelt from Sweden. Depret who hasn’t fought in over a year after some personal problems, made his comeback fight. On paper not an easy fight for Depret. However, just 36 seconds in the fight it is Depret who finishes his opponent with a tight guillotine choke! The Belgium crowd goes wild, as they cheer the win of their fighter!
And this ends a great night of action packed fights in Holland! The Passenger Terminal was completely sold out with thousands. There was top quality entertainment and great technical as well as brutal fights. The second event will take place on 30th of January in Charleroi, Belgium, where the fighters will fight for a spot in the finals (April 2011) to win $150.000,-!
