Decided lack of cutmen!

I've been involved with MMA for a long time and officiated fighters at every level. The one thing that is glaring to me is the lack of skilled cutmen in MMA. Now obviously at the UFC level they are using dedicated cutmen and they are the best you can find, but at other levels very few gyms have good cutmen. Even some of the large, very well known gyms do not have good cutmen.

I have reffed fights where, inbetween rounds, I've literally watched cornermen shorten their fighter's career just because they don't know how to handle their cuts. I have seen kids that couldn't go pro because they had developed too much scar tissue around their eyes and were prone to bleeding.

If you are reading this and you corner for a fighter or you run an MMA gym, go to a boxing gym and learn how to handle cuts. Buy a noswell or freeze a bunch of spoons and learn how to work down bruising! Get some adrenaline and vaseline and learn how to staunch bleeding!

You owe to your fighters and yourself to learn these skills. A lot cutmen are weird dudes and they treat their job like an ancient chinese secret so you're going to have to pay your dues and prove your worth before they help you, but it is well worth it!
