Strikeforce may send LWs to Japan for tournament

I posted this in the Japanese MMA section, but it's news for Strikeforce too... So I guess I'll mention it here as well.

Quote:
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Dream co-producer Real Entertainment plans on forging ahead in the turbulent Japanese mixed martial arts promotion business with an eight-fighter lightweight tournament starting in May, sources tell ESPN.com.

HDNet confirmed to ESPN.com that they would broadcast the tournament stateside.

The field would consist of Strikeforce and Real Entertainment fighters, possibly but not necessarily under the Dream banner, and likely without FEG, which has been its promotional partner since Pride Fighting Championships was purchased by Zuffa in 2007.

"We're committed to keeping our fighters active, but if we can help Dream and have our fighters go over there and participate in their tournament, why not?" said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, who confirmed ongoing discussions between his promotion and Real Entertainment for the May event. "If things go the way they should, I feel confident we'll send a bunch of guys over."

Strikeforce could provide up to five fighters. Japan's Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri and Katsunori Kikuno are also expected to participate.

If this comes about, I'd definitely like to see Melendez back in action. Hopefully, that will happen, since DREAM sent Aoki over for Strikeforce, it would be a big letdown if they didn't return the favor for what looks like a big event.

Any fighters people want to see participate?

As for your comment about SF returning the favour for them sending Aoki over to the US to fight, I think they returned the favour ten fold when they got both Diaz and Mousasi amongst others on there show such as Thomson for example dam they even get access to Overeem, I think Dream get a lot more benefits from this deal in terms of been able to use fighters than SF does to be fair, I think what SF get is a Market into the Asian community for there own promotion, I would not be surprised at all if Japan have access to SF live shows unlike here in the UK, and if not they really should be looking into setting up a TV contract over there, which is what I hope they are scouting for over here in UK.

But Yea if Dream do set up a LW tournament would be great to see Melendez chosen, I would like to see Dream bring Nagashima into MMA also to compete in there Tourney.

Be nice to see Bellator join this little union and get Alvarez out there then things could really get interesting.

Jorge Masvisal, K.J. Noons, Billy Evangelista and Justin Wilcox would be pretty sick... with Aoki, Kawajiri and Kikuno... that's a LW tourney for sure..

They do that for sounds that don't exist within their language. You can basically replicate his name in japanese ケイジェイ ヌウンス probably. they could just use a soft su like with desu and it is pretty much the same.

StrikeForce should send over Evangelista, Melendez, Noons and I'll be happy to watch. They'll hardly need them for a while, their card can be sold on the Grand Prix alone. I hope Alvarez is able to go as well. I wouldn't mind Noons/Alvarez or Aoki/Melendez II. I really can't Japanese fighter besides Aoki making any impact in their own tournament.

This would be so great for Japan.

And so many great LW's in both Promotions. I also believe Coker would make this happen.

I like where SF is going with this. They are a lot more fair than the UFC with their fighters and give them a lot more rights. This will help grow the sport.

Mousasi was fighting in DREAM for at least a year before he fought in SF. And Overeem had a contract with FEG through both K-1 and K-1 Heros before DREAM was even formed by FEG and Real Entertainment. Though I don't think either of them were technically part of the talent exchange since it didn't start until late 2009.

But SF got Mayhem, Jacare, Zaromskis, Manhoef, JZ Cavalcante, Shaolin, Aoki and they're getting Sergei for their HW tourney. That's a lot that I can think of, including two of DREAM's champions and one fighter that won a SF belt.

I think DREAM has only really received Diaz and Thomson that I can recall.

It'd be great to see Alvarez in there. Bellator seemed to be good with letting him fight both DREAM and SF fighters too, so that might be possible.

This could be a really fun tourney if they get the top LWs from DREAM, SF and Bellator together.
