Elite-Xc and Showtime's marketing is A+

Their marketing is great because after the fights, the conversation in the sports bar was about why the UFC and Pride don't have the best fighters and how an upstart company managed to get them...also on a side note what's with the constant comparison of Goldberg and pro wrestling to mma, as if they're on the same level

Goldberg even said, "except what I did was fake". I think most of the comments were made by Mauro trying to help Goldberg's commentary relate to MMA.

This was definitely better than any of the Showtime Boxing promotions I've seen though. Usually they (Showtime) suck IMO.

I really enjoyed the Showtime card!

I"ll admit I watched the show really late last night,so maybe I missed some comments, but the only mention of PRIDE and UFC was in regards to the people fighting experience in those companies. Like with KJ Noon how he was on the PRIDEFC American tryouts(or something like that) or how Shamrock was a former UFC MiddleWeight or Smokin Joe how he fought in PRIDE and struggled recently(save with the Crow).

I never heard them say they had the best in the world.

The only "big" hype was Gracie vs Shamrock being legend on legend(which is arguable in the MMA world).

But like I said I did watch it late last night.

It wasn't just fight night but also the months leading up to the event, when every interview was how Elite-XC had acquired the best fighters in the world for this event from Pride and the UFC. Before the fight the bar was taking a pool on when K.J. Noons would knock out Crazy Horse. You had to be there they seemed to think K.J. Noons was the second coming of Gomi. It was just strange to watch an event with people that aren't even casual fans and how they perceived Elite-XC

uh, PRIDE and the UFC don't have the best fighters?

uh...

ok, a washed up Loiseu (and i'm even a fan of his), a worthless cabbage, and a cheating disqualified Shamrock? yeah, their best figthter was Renzo, and look what happened.

I'm sorry, but i have a bad feeling about all the new upstart MMA promotions... it's going to turn into a free-for-all. everyone dumping on the other's fighters, and actually pulling the sport apart. it's going to turn into boxing; a worthless, meaningless marketing orgasm...

the sport of MMA like it is--and could be--will be dead in 5 years if this keeps up. only until MMA gets treated like a sport, meaning as one unified or at least sanctioned sport, it will never be anything but a greedy specticle...

I usually only watch UFC and Pride. EliteXC card was quite good. Production was good. Having a PRO wrestler commentate was kinda troubling but he made it clear that what he did before was fake. The girls outfits were great too esp standing in the backgorund.

UFC could take a lesson.

Dragon entrance was lame.

It was pretty good for a first show but they'll need to improve a lot. Let me say also refering to other organizations - there only hope -- actually made them SEEM more professional. Unlike the UFC which has a forbidden words list but then the commentator refering to pro wrestling in relationship to MMA kinda detracted from whatever that lent them.

They dont have the best fighters but there were some interesting matchups. Yeah, it was good but they have to be watched to make sure they dont turn it into a pro wrestling stunt. But so far they get a pass from me.

this i do agree with... their recognition of the other organizations was a show of class. to ignore them, like the UFC does is silly and disrespectful to the fans, the fighters and the sport--and it's history. PRIDE announcers acknowledge the UFC from time to time--when it makes sense to. But at least Showtime talked about them often, creating a more broad MMA community among those new to the sport. If anything, that was their best piece of work... now they need to get rid of that standup counter...

light 02-13-2007 03:01 PM

Yep, standup counter is bad idea.

I can't really take the UFC seriously until they start admiting that the MMA world is bigger then UFC. Maybe they will ban the word MMA soon and replace it with UFC. They still have the best fighters but they keep talking about how they want to see the sport grow but they dont even want to admit how big the sport is.

One problem with UFC is too they have a lot of great fights on the undercards but dont show them. So, it would be hard for the women to get fights there until they start showing at least all fo the fights

Basically it just makes the UFC look very non confident about their status in the MMA world. Now, Im asking myself what they have to fear.. hmm
