If you were going to build an MMA fighter from scratch
You have 5 catagories to rank. You rank them according to what you think is most important for an MMA fighter.
One is Wrestling ability. All kinds of wrestling....American college...where it seems a lot of fighters come from, especially in the lower weights. Plus the Sambo wrestling which I have heard Fedor was/is great at. And Greco-Roman...which you see in the Olympics.
There was a heavyweight or super heavyweight greco roman wrestler from Russia by the name of Aleksandr Karelin who won the gold in 1988 - 1992 - & 1996 who was unbelievable. He may have never lost a match in his career. When he shook - you could see the muscles rippling down his body....most of his opponents probably lost just when they saw that.
I read somewhere that if he would have become an MMA fighter in his prime...he would have been unbeatable after some training...just because his physical gifts were so awesome.
Anyway - each category will be like this. Having the different kinds of it.
One is Boxing ability.
One is Jiu-Jitsu
One is cardio - I have seen the importance of this...especially in the heavier weight classes. If you get gassed too soon...you are in big trouble.
One is heart - what I mean by this is what I'm sure everybody else thinks it means. Will the guy take some brutal shots and not give up.
A recent example from boxing. The Pacquiao vs. Mosley fight. Pacquiao drops Mosley in the 3rd round with a left. Mosley gets on his bike & puts up the defense...& he does this for the whole rest of the fight. Mosley had said what a warrior he was...um...no. He gave up trying to win the fight after that one punch & just wanted to survive it. I've seen people now referring to him as Shame Mosley.
Now look at the Pacquiao vs. Margarito fight. You have to give it to Margarito...he was getting the bejesus beat out of him. He had a fractured orbital bone by his eye. Yet he kept coming & trying until the end. I'm sure a lot of people saw what Margaritos face looked like at the end of the fight.
I'm sure you guys would have examples of heart from many MMA fights.
OK guys....how would you rank these 5 categories in order of importance for an MMA fighter. I'm interested in what people will have to say. Again, these are the 5 to rank in order of importance.
Oops - I just thought of another one that should be in the mix. Being a smart fighter. Game planning for your opponent. I guess that should be in the mix too. So it is 6 categories.
wrestling
boxing
jiu-jitsu
cardio
heart
