Heavyweight GP Round 2

OK so after one pretty meh round of the GP it's on to the second round. The matchups look much more interesting than the first's, though. They are:

Alistair Overeem vs Antonio Silva
Josh Barnett vs Sergei Kharitonov

I predict Overeem will land something big early in the fight, but Silva will prove a game opponent.

Barnett should be able to avoid getting in a standup war by being the better wrestler. He could get himself in a world of trouble if it doesn't hit the mat, though.

So, my early pick for the championship is Overeem vs Barnett, but more importantly I'm predicting more evenly contested fights that should headline one helluva card.

What do you guys think?

I believe Overeem will TKO Bigfoot in the 1st round and Barnett will win via submission in the 2nd Round. That matchup will be Overeem vs Barnett in the finals. This is a tough call for me as Overeem had great TDD in his last fight but Barnett has the skills to get this fight to the ground. I am actually calling for Barnett to win by Submission in the 3rd round.

The Overeem vs Silva fight is a lot more interesting in my opinion. Its a very unique fight that I see going one of two ways.

Either Silva proves to be a big punching bag for Overeem to showcase his phenomenal stand up OR Silva pushes the pace and gets Overeem out of his rhythm forcing the grinding clinch/wrestling match in which Silva wins by decision or late TKO. When it comes down to it though I would say chances are Overeem wins but I wont be surprised in the least if Silva pulls out the victory.

Barnett vs Sergei = another Barnett submission victory no doubt. No disrespect to Sergei hes a great hw but I say Barnett wins this fairly easily.

I say Overeem vs Barnett as well along with 90% of the mmaforum community.

I'm calling what after the Reem/Werdum fight most people seem to think is the upset: The Reem and Kharitonov will advance.

Overeem will not get taken down and Bigfoot won't fall to the floor every time he gets hit. Second round TKO.

Kharitonov will defend the takedown and outbox Barnett and punch him into submission.

Wow, I kinda went out on a limb on that last call.

Reems takedown defence will be good enough to keep Big Foot on the feet, and Big Foot isnt going to fall to the floor every 2 seconds so i can see Reem easily outstriking him. Reem is far more explosive, athletic and i'd say stronger along with being a significantly better striker and that should be enough to get a finish here. Big Foot isnt all that hes being made out to be - Mike Kyle had him in trouble on the feet. Reem wont fear the ground to anywhere near the extent he did with Werdum.

I also see Barnett comfortably dropping Sergei on his head and getting a late submission or a UD. Sergei is better than Rogers on the ground, but he wont have alot to offer Josh.

Barnett v Overeem final. Now THAT is an interesting fight, i see Reem taking it, but Josh is a hell of a test for any fighter. So underrated and often ignored amidst him taking more steroids than Ronnie Coleman, but he is for real and could cause Overeem all kinds of problems. Still though - Reem via TKO.
