Braulio Estima talks fighting Jacare, says St. Pierre could win ADCC

Quote:

Weight and absolute champion of ADCC in 2009, Braulio Estima was training hard for this yearís super fight, when heís fighting Ronaldo Jacare. Braulio tells us about the advantage of Ďfighting homeí, in England, where he current lives, and training along with names like Roger Gracie and Georges. St. Pierre.

ďIím getting prepared for a war, Iím doing my homework. Thereíll be sparks all over the placeĒ, said Braulio, whoís never been defeated by Jacare in Jiu-Jitsu competitions. ďI want to reign in ADCC for a long time. He didnít poke me, he just said the truth. I really never beat him upÖ Itís a past thing, I donít care much, because in the end the last winner is the one whoíll be remembered as the real winnerĒ.

Check below the exclusive interview with the black belt, who talked about his plans for debuting in MMA, evaluated Roger Gracieís evolution in Strikeforce and commented on the trainings with St. Pierre, UFC champion and, according to him, an owner of a perfect Jiu-Jitsu. ďHis Jiu-Jitsu is really sharp, explosive and efficientÖ Heíd have real chances to win ADCCĒ.

How was it training with St. Pierre?

Itís always really great training with him. Heís a phenomenal athlete, heís really experienced and heís a nice guy. We are always better after training with him then we were when we first came here.

How did it come up?

Roger came back last week from Canada, and we trained in London. GSP came to England to train and strengthen the team for Rogerís training for Strikeforce.

What are your thoughts about his Jiu-Jitsu?

His Jiu-Jitsu is really sharp, explosive and efficientÖ Heíd have real chances to win ADCC.

Youíre now focused in ADCC, but do you still consider fighting MMA in the future?

Now Iím really focused in ADCC, 100%, but I always train MMA as a way to prepare myself, and I intend to debut soon. Iíve had some hindrance with Shine Fights, but, soon, Iíll be on the cage.

Is your idea to debut this year, or is it a project for 2012?

I have some propositions to fight this year. If everything goes right, I can fight this year, but in MMA thereís always some unexpected things happening, soÖ

Are you dealing with some event?

Weíre exchanging emails, talking about itÖ

How are the trainings with GSP a good help in your prep for ADCC?

Heís one of the most explosive guys Iíve ever trained with. His Wrestling is awesome, incredible and heís really fast and technical. Iíve learned much, besides feeling how itís really like to fight a professional wrestler. He breaks the guard really well, pulling and grabbing you, and then he stands-up when he has you on the top. Since Jacare is a really explosive guy and has similar skills, itís helping me a lot to get prepared.

What do you expect when fighting Jacare?

Iím prepared for the toughest bout of my career, very busy. Iím getting prepared for a war, Iím doing my homework. Thereíll be sparks all over the place.

Jacare poked you, since youíve never defeated him. Does that motivate you even more?

Iím really motivated for this fight. Nothing personal, but for the challenge of being the champion of the super fight. I want to reign in ADCC for a long time. He didnít poke me, he just said the truth. I really never beat him upÖ Itís a past thing, I donít care much, because in the end the last winner is the one whoíll be remembered as the real winner. The same way I behave when Iím defending my titles. Whatís gone is gone, and it wonít matter. To become the champion doesnít mean a thing if youíre not trained for the competition. Whoeverís best on the day will win. I just want to thank him for giving me the chance to do it, since I thought it was never going to happen.

Do you believe that being dedicated to MMA will put him on a disadvantage place for this fight?

I watch him fighting MMA, Iím a fan, I cheer for him. I see many interview with him, since when he first started fighting MMA, I know he trains Jiu-Jitsu with and with no gi every week, so I believe he wouldnít get into this if he wasnít prepared for it. I know he trains everything, so itíll be a great fight.

Back to GSP, whoís fighting Nick Diaz in UFCÖ Watching his trainings, how do you think this fight will be like?

Man, I bet 100% in GSP. Heís really tactic, and Diaz wonít bring much danger to him. Iíve been helping him on the trainings a lot, I should go to Montreal right after ADCC to be on his team for his final preparation against Diaz, due to the fact I have a similar structure and Iím lefty like Diaz. Diaz doesnít move a lot and he goes for it, so it helps GSP.

How do you see Rogerís evolution in MMA?

Roger is really tough, he is getting better and better every week. Heís a smart guy and knows how to explore his advantages. Heís going far. His Boxing and Muay Thai are evolving a lotÖ The two kilometers knee is not that pleasant (laughs).

Heís fighting King Mo in Strikeforce. What do you expect of this fight?

Itíll b a tough fight. King Mo has a knockout punch, so he canít blink. But Roger is better than him. I hope King Mo goes for the KO in the beginning, because thatís the only way King Mo could beat Roger up in my opinion, because if he takes him down, what I donít think is likely, heís be on the area where Roger is best. And if he plays in a long distance, Roger will get better and better, and itíll be the opposite for King Mo.

Do you believe that, with a win, Roger will be ready for a title shot against Dan Henderson or go to UFC?

I guess if Roger wins this one he deserves a title shot more than everyone else. I believe weíll have two top Jiu-Jitsu guys with belts (Roger and Jacare)Ö Thatís great. And going to UFC will depend on the marketing strategy the owners will use, if theyíll keep the champions of each organization or if they have Strikeforce as a class B in MMA. I guess that, if the fans ask for it, itíll easily happen.
For those of you who don't know - Braulio Estima is a jiu-jitsu phenom, one of the best in the modern era definitely. Won ADCC in '09 - both his division and the absolute, as well as winning the JJ world championships on 3 occasions.

Always enjoying hearing these guys who are phenomenal in one aspect of martial arts talking about GSP's skill in it - such as Estima (BJJ) here, as well as Pac-man/Roach commenting on how far GSP's boxing has come along. Tells you just how good GSP's skills really are.

Anyway, back to Estima - really looking forward to his superfight against Jacare this year at the ADCC, and look forward to seeing his MMA career unfold.

Estima is a monster and I think he'll edge out Jacare. Jacare is just spread too thin at this level. I like better what Maia has done, focusing on MMA to become a true elite fighter in every category.

I guess it helps that Jacare is fighting a nobody next in MMA so he doesn't have to do two big fights (defending his belt and the superfight in ADCC) in one timespan.

Agreed - I see Estima pulling out a narrow points win, but would not be surprised at all if Jacare managed to take it.

Yeah - Maia has gone pretty much from all-in BJJ to all-in MMA, I like his mentality lol.

I still can't believe Rockhold got the title shot ...

Just like Maia, I believe Jacare has concentrated on his MMA career rather than BJJ now right? I also think Jacares BJJ better suits MMA than Maia at least in the TD department. Jacare can shoot a double leg, whereas Maia has to get close to his opponent and drag him to the mat. Jacare also looks to have much more natural striking ability, he just isn't polished yet but no doubt he is vastly improving. The only area Maia is better is in the submission transition, where he is probably second to none (except perhaps Roger Gracie).

There is also no doubt that in BJJ, Ronaldo is the more recognized and more accomplished fighter than Braulio. Even despite not having been competing as seriously since undertaking MMA more seriously.

ADCC could be close though, but still give me Souza.
