'Business as usual' means death of StrikeForce

Quote:

Dana White's mantra after UFC parent company Zuffa purchased its biggest rival, Strikeforce, was "Business as usual." What he supposedly meant was that Strikeforce could continue to run as its own independent entity.

What White actually meant was that he would add another promotion to his tombstone.

Let's face it: Strikeforce is a dying promotion. We don't know exactly how long the UFC will keep Strikeforce on life support, and we don't know exactly how long Showtime will keep televising it, but we can plainly see that the UFC is taking what it wants from Strikeforce and getting rid of the rest.

On Saturday night, after Dan Henderson beat Fedor Emelianenko, I asked Scott Coker, the man who's supposedly still in charge of Strikeforce, if he wanted Fedor to return. Coker told me emphatically that he did, in fact, want Fedor back in the Strikeforce cage. And then on Thursday, UFC President Dana White announced that Strikeforce was done with Fedor.

If you're shocked to learn that White -- not Coker -- gets final say on these things, you're probably one of those people who seriously believed it a couple years ago when UFC.com ran an April Fool's Day story saying it was going to build an arena in Fedor's hometown of Stary Oskol.

And, of course, Fedor is just the tip of the iceberg. Here's a look at what has happened to some of the other high-profile fighters who were on the Strikeforce roster at the time of the Zuffa purchase:

Alistair Overeem: The Strikeforce heavyweight champion has been released amid conflicts between the UFC and Overeem's managers at Golden Glory, despite a victory over Fabricio Werdum that clearly established Overeem as the top heavyweight in the world outside the UFC.

Nick Diaz: The Strikeforce welterweight champion was given a superfight with UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre -- depriving Strikeforce of one of its best fighters and Showtime of one of its biggest draws.

Mayhem Miller: One of Strikeforce's most popular names, Miller has moved to the UFC, where he'll coach on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Marloes Coenen: The woman who was Strikeforce's 135-pound champion at the time of the Zuffa purchase lost her belt and then lost her spot on the Strikeforce roster, as Zuffa cut ties with most of Overeem's Golden Glory teammates.

Cris Cyborg: The 145-pound women's champion and the generally recognized top female in MMA hasn't fought in more than a year and doesn't have any fights scheduled.

Dan Henderson: The Fedor fight was the final fight on Henderson's Strikeforce contract. It's hard to imagine Zuffa re-signing him to Strikeforce -- if they're going to keep doing paying Henderson, they'd want him fighting the marquee light heavyweights in the UFC.

What's the point of keeping Strikeforce around if Zuffa isn't going to keep Strikeforce's best fighters around? There's just no sense in keeping this promotion going, except that Strikeforce still has that Showtime contract to fulfill.

Showtime has to see what the rest of us can see: Strikeforce is going in the direction of Pride and Affliction before it: A promotion that put on a lot of great fights, but was ultimately swallowed whole by the UFC.

Found this to be a great read, wanted to share :)

I can see this being the demise of Strikeforce also. It would be cool if Zuffa (Dana White apparantly) kept the promotion as a second tier or a feeder league. Whack it on tv, Bobs your uncle. MMA is growing too fast to be held back by one promotion. There will be too many fighters with lots of potential, not getting their time to shine.

Added this on another thread, but I felt it was quite fitting.

Zuffa is "The Empire" and Dana White is "Lord Vader," lolz!

As corny as it may sound are these guys not consolidating and eliminating all opposition ONE BY ONE.

This isn't exactly news. We knew the instant Zuffa bought SF that its days were numbered it was just a matter of how long. Looks like it is coming to a head soon and the sooner the better. I want to see all the top fighters in one org so we can see the best possible fights without cross promotion hassles.

If Dana is Darth Vader then who are the other characters?

How about.

Yoda - Greg Jackson
Han Solo - Randy Couture
Jar Jar Binks - Jonathan Brookins
Mace Windu - Anderson Silva
Luke Skywalker - GSP
Boba Fett - BJ Penn
Lando Calrissian - Rampage
Darth Maul - Wandy!!

The problem with what Zuffa and DW thing is:

They are knocking all out, and buying others. Its monopoly to them. That's why it will be in the near future for them to decide who continues in the sport, and who should go and find another job to do! This is lame and very sad. There must be competitors not just one person/company trying to take over everything. This will really hurt the sport, and we for sure will loose lots of fighters just because SAM "Dana White" Said So!

Big Nog was right when he talked about DW doesn't decide on behalf of fighters whether to continue or not. And it wasn't a long time ago when he talked about it.

Even fighters now are swinging their tails just to give notice or happy cheers for DW. They are talking rubbish just to please their MASTER, the exact same way a DOG does with his MASTER!

What a shame!

Hilarious...here would be the candidates in an alternate universe!

Han Solo - Brian Ebersole
Chewee - Forrest Griffin
Jar Jar Binks - Jonathan Brookins (no contest...lolz)
Mace Windu - Anderson Silva (nice!)
Jabba The Hutt - Roy Nelson

Greg Jackson should be Yoda, but JDS comes very close. --->

Hahaha. JDS definately looks like Yoda in that pic. Can't believe I missed Forrest as Chewy. To be fair I did think of it, about 10 mins after the post. And Big Country is blatently Jabba! :)
