Gilbert Melendez to Defend Belt Against Jorge Masvidal - Late Fall

http://www.mmafighting.com/2011/08/1...-jorge-masvid/

Quote:
Gilbert Melendez's desire to fight in the UFC will have to wait. The Strikeforce lightweight champion will square off with Jorge Masvidal in his next title defense, which will take place in the fall, according to Melendez's trainer Cesar Gracie.

In a Friday interview, Gracie told MMA Fighting that a date had not yet been decided upon, but that the camp had been informed of the championship pairing.

Strikeforce has not yet announced any events past September, but it is not expected to host any major events in October, making November or December the likely target for the bout.

The fight comes as no surprise. It had previously been rumored after Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker called the winner of June's Masvidal vs. KJ Noons fight a "frontrunner" to face Melendez. Masvidal won the bout via unanimous decision.

In his most recent bout, Melendez returned after a one-year layoff to crush the "Crusher," Tatsuya Kawajiri, in a 3-minute, 14-second TKO. The victory was the fifth straight for Melendez, who improved to 19-2.

Afterward, he spoke about the possibility of moving over to the UFC like teammate Nick Diaz, but it appears that possibility has been shelved for the time being.

Masvidal's win over Noons in June was his second straight win and third in his last four outings. The victory helped him improve to 22-6.

This is gonna be one sick fight! I'm assuming Gilbert's gonna wanna stand and trade with Masvidal for the first round, wanting to prove that he can strike with him - fireworks 1st round. Then I see him taking him down in the second and finishing him with brutal elbows (ala Kawajiri).

On the fence in this one, but hope Masvidal really brings it like he did against Noons and beats Melendez up a little

Thanks to limba for this AWESOME sig

I don't care who wins unless it's a lay and pray affair. Masvidal has some serious potential and Melendez has looked untouchable in Strikeforce.

Well deserved title shot for Jorge. He looked fantastic in his last fight and from what I've heard from people who trained with him, hes the most underrated 155 lb'er on the planet.

He probably is overrrated. Unfortunately he is overshadowed by guys from the UFC and other free agents. He needs a fight in the UFC.

Masvidal overrated? He beat Evangelista and Noons in his last 2 fights where everybody thought he'd lose and he still doesn't get any respect.

I can't believe that I screwed up that badly. What I meant to say is that he is underrated. Sorry about all the confusion.

Ohh how this fight is shaping up to be an epic war!

I like both guys, I'd give the slight edge to the champ. Masvidal is incredibly sick though. His stand up is great, cardio great and switches is up with his combination's.

PUMPED!

Now that strikeforce is in the shitter, let's get these guys over to UFC stat.

Masvidal is a great striker with excellent head movement, there's no way Melendez is going to catch him with anything. Paul Daley could hardly touch him in a fight I and many others believe Jorge won.

Jorge is very underrated and I can totally see him winning this fight via decision.

Well all Melendez has to do is take him down and it's pretty much over. Melendez is a good grownd and pownder when he can be. Not to mention that because of the guys he practices with he has good BJJ defense.
