Freedom Fight card taking shape
By BEN LEESON, THE SUDBURY STAR

Some meat was added to the bones of Sudbury's first mixed martial arts event Monday with the official announcement of nine bouts for Freedom Fight, Sept. 10 at Sudbury Community Arena.

A lightweight (155-pound) tilt between London, Ont.based Chris Horodecki (18-3) and Calgary's Brad Cardinal (13-7) will be one to watch.

Horodecki, who has fought for high-level promotions such as WEC and Bellator FC, has won two straight fights, most recently outpointing Chris Saunders at a Bellator event in July.

Cardinal has lost two of three, including his most recent bout against Daron Cruickshank, but had amassed an eight-fight win streak prior to that.

Ontario's first sanctioned women's match, between 1 3 5 -p o u n d e r s Va l e r i e Létourneau (3-2), from Montreal, and Bethany Marshall (4-0), from Yorktown, Va., is the co-main event.

"I'm more than pleased with the way the card is coming together," said Espanola-based promoter Pete Rodley, owner of Freedom Fight.

"We have a lot of variety, something for everyone. This is 16 years of matchmaking coming to fruition, really."

Though Rodley has promoted events across Canada for a decade and a half, MMA wasn't made legal in Ontario until last year.

"We have tried to give people the best fights possible," Rodley said.

"When I booked these fights, I did it as a fan. I'm really excited to watch them."

Also on the card are a trio of Northern Ontarians. Chris St. Jean and Luc Nadeau are from Sudbury, while Brent Fryia hails from Sault Ste. Marie.

St. Jean (3-2), who trains at the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts, will face Igor Caetano (2-1), from Toronto, in a welter weight (170-pound) matchup.

Nadeau (2-0), a representative of Team Shredder, will take on Steve Simms (2-0), from Extreme Couture in Toronto, in a lightweight bout.

Fryia (5-2), who trains at Steel City MMA, faces Jesse Fox (4-4), from Red Deer, Alta., at bantamweight (135 pounds).

Jason Bissonnette (2-1) and Kris Lee (1-1) will clash in a light heavyweight (205-pound) affair.

A pair of strikers, Muay Thai specialist Syd Barnier (33) and karate champion Chucky Mady (5-4), meet in a bantamweight tilt.

Pete Brown (2-3) and Mike Sledzion (2-1) will meet at 155 pounds, while George Abdallah (0-1) and Eric Montgomery (1-0) are set to fight at 135 pounds.

And we have another regional promotion made up of rising stars and UFC vets. This does sound interesting though. I wasn't even aware that Chris Horodecki was even cut from the UFC.

He fought at the last Bellator event.

P.S He is going to lay a BEAT DOWN in memory of Shawn Tompkins.

You mean in memory of Shawn Tompkins? Speaking of Bellator I need to see 48 this Saturday.

You know what I mean man, he is going to go all out, same with Stout and Hominick. Stout is going to put out a SHOW in his next fight.

Well it probably affected Stout more then it did Hominick. For Hominick he was probably close to his trainer for sure. Stout was more affected however cause he lost his brother in law.

Horodecki withdrew, apparently because of Shawn Tompkins' death.

Tony Hervey will fight Brad Cardinal.

Well that brings less meaning to this fight card. Just the same I can understand why he did. I would do the same if my close friend passed.
