Yahoo asks 22 journalists for P4P rankings
Quote:
UFC president Dana White believes UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar is the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter in MMA today.
Pollsters, though, weren't ready to declare the recently victorious champ the runner-up to Anderson Silva's top-dog status.
In the latest Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings, in which 22 top MMA journalists vote, Edgar moved up two spots to a No. 4 ranking. But the No. 2 slot still belongs to Georges St-Pierre.
Edgar survived another first-round beatdown from Gray Maynard, but at UFC 136, he pulled off a TKO victory (the duo's January meeting ended in a draw). Immediately afterward, White declared Edgar, who's a smaller lightweight, the sport's No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter and believed he had done enough to bump St-Pierre from the spot.
In the Yahoo! Sports poll, Edgar passed Dominick Cruz and Jose Aldo, but St-Pierre and Jon Jones still rank ahead of win. St-Pierre, in fact, received all 22 second-place votes and maintained consensus No. 2 status.
All top seven spots remained occupied by current UFC champs.
The poll is conducted monthly, and MMAjunkie.com's Dann Stupp, John Morgan and Steven Marrocco all vote. Ten points are awarded for a first-place vote and one point for a 10th-place vote.
The full results included:
1. Anderson Silva, 220 points (22 first-place votes)
2. Georges St-Pierre, 198 (22 second-place votes)
3. Jon Jones, 160
4. Frankie Edgar, 153
5. Jose Aldo, 140
6. Dominick Cruz, 112
7. Cain Velasquez, 77
T-8. Jon Fitch, 37
T-8. Gilbert Melendez, 37
10. Rashad Evans, 17
Other receiving votes: Gray Maynard (13), Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (9), Dan Henderson (8), Nick Diaz (7), Jake Shields (6), Junior Dos Santos (5), B.J. Penn (5), Chael Sonnen (2), Lyoto Machida (2)

Dana is crazy for listing Frankie #2 and dropping GSP.

Dana like to inflate his personal favorites regardless of anything else. If Silva was to fall off DW's Xmas card list, then he would magically fall to #3 and JBJ/Edgar would be the new top 2

Melendez? Really?
I agree with 1-7, and Fitch at 8, but Melendez doesn't belong on that list.

I agree, i'm not on the melendez hype-train. Apart from the Japanese who can't wrestle, he's only beat Josh Thomson who isn't top 10, and Thomson beat him a few fights before that. When your talking P4P, i don't think you can rank him.

Dana's argument for Frankie being no.2 is that he is fighting guys 10-20 lbs heavier than he is. So if you actually consider what pound for pound means he might have a point.
GSP isn't taking on any 185lb guys. I think he might have a point.
Although I think Frankie would get schooled by Aldo be a hell of a fight though.

Or it could be playing into his favor with the speed advantage. Is Cain all of a sudden the #2 P4P fighter because he used his speed and striking against a super heavyweight Brock?

Well I'm convinced he only said it to hype up Edgar purely because he had just fought, people were buzzing about such a great fight. If GSP was fighting next week then you be guaranteed to hear nothing about Edgar in P4P talks. It'd be GSP first or second. Dana is a promotor, it's not like he's going to reduce hype by saying "Meh Frankies not all that"

GSP would have zero chance of beating Cruz, Aldo, or Edgar if they were the same size which is what a P4P list is supposed to be about. This is a who has had the most impressive run list.
