This crap is pretty lame.
There is a big difference here.
UFC dont have GP tournaments, and if champs were not to fight in gp to protect themselves, then yes, there would be no differences between protecting champs in the ufc and pride.
you can put the biggest champ ever with a b-level fighter or even worse, and there is still about a 10-15% chance the champ will loose, pride 33 being the perfect example.
Thats why a champ that is protected wont fight anything else than title fights, and will not fight more than twice a year or will fight people that fit their style.
Gomi has fought 5 times this year, one title defense. Have u ever seen a champ defend his title 2 months after having a fight before? Gomi fought at NYE, and he still gives a chance to a new fighter to make his mark against the champ. And you want Gomi to put his title at risk as well? Im not saying Gomi lost because he didnt train enough(well he says thats the reason), but if it wasnt for non-title fights, u wouldnt see that much of Gomi, just like u dont see much of Chuck, Sylvia...
If anything is wrong with non-title fights, its that it certainly doesnt protect the champs at all..making a champ fight so many times in a year just gives him more chances of loosing, its pure probabilities here.
Silva fights in the OWGP, ends up getting KTFO by cro cop, how is that protecting him? Hendo fighting against Silva, how is that protecting hendo?
Silva's loss to Arona was in a GP, and whoever won that fight was going to fight the winner of shogun/overeem... how could Arona be crowned title holder if he had to defend it right away after the same night?
The only one protected in Pride is Fedor, and im not even sure hes protected..im thinking more that hes having trouble finding opponents to make a fight exciting..
