Super Fighter League - MMA India

India has FINALLY come together with its first real MMA league. I know Dana White has mentioned expanding into India eventually, but this new league will really put some light to perhaps train fighters in MMA for India.

A lot of people do not realize the potential India has for fighters. Various forms of martial arts has its origin's based in India (look up Boddhidharma, originator of Shaolin Kung Fu). Kushti (wrestling) is also very prevalent in India, dates back to 5 BC and may be a good base for Indian MMA fighters.

The sport is really in its infancy in India (think MMA in North America in the early 90's). I like the fact that they are going with the general rules that MMA in North America has, as well as using a cage as opposed to a boxing ring.

They have a prominent Bollywood actor who is acting as part owner/promoter so they should get plenty of press.

The first 'Main Event' is a little bit of a gong show with Bob Sapp/James Thompson, but the idea is to get people excited about fighting, and this will no doubt be a quick violent fight, as well as having some recognizible names.

I for one am excited to see the undercard, with a bunch of Indian fighters. I am hoping to see this sport really excel in India.

Has India any notable fighters in other martial arts on international level (like Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Olympic Wrestling, Judo, Kyokushin Karate, etc.) that could/would switch to MMA¿

There are a few like Jaideep Singh (I think he fights in K1), Sushil Kumar (who won bronze in the 66kg weight class for wrestling at the Olympics) to name a few that come to mind, that may be able to transition.

It's weird though, because most combat sports in the country were really ignored compared to Cricket/Field Hockey. With the exception of perhaps wrestling and Kalaripayattu (a martial art practised mostly in the South), there really wasn't a lot of talk of martial arts, which is odd considering a lot of martial arts originated from the country (and it has a strong history of wrestling as well).

I believe that a lot of the Pelwans (wrestlers) have the easiest transition, but they will need plenty of striking training before they can come up in the world of MMA.

That being said, there is a LOT of guys in Canada/U.S who have Indian backgrounds, that are coming up the ranks these days.

It would just be another feeder org for zuffa and tbh I think the talent would be somewhat deluded. Zuffa and most mma orgs are international.

You better ask if India has any notable athlete , soccer, basketball, you name it, besides Cricket these guys are really bad in sports, when you think it is a nation of 1.2 billion, it's kinda sucks.

Gabe Rudeger vs Paul Kelly added to this inaugeral event. Might be a promotion to keep your eyes on.
