The mental aspect of sparring
First Post!
Wanted to first say I have been training for a little over three years now and it literally has changed my attitude towards life. Have a karate background and now do a mix of MT and BJJ 3 or 4 times a week. I look forward to sharing info with you guys in the future and learning from you all to become a better fighter.
Now, I have gotten to the point where I am full speed free sparring and I feel like my training has really regressed. I am a very analytical person and without "knowing" what I am going in to work on I get lost in my thoughts. Combos, tells, distancing, its all just not comming naturally enough and the thought I go through kills reaction time.
I have found bjj much easier and the transition has been very smooth as I feel more and more comfortable.
Both my trainers just tell me to calm down and that it is only experience.
How about you guys? Do you remember when you first went from "training" to "fighting"? What were some of your more successful strategies vs unsuccessful. Were there any major epiphanies where it finally started to click?
Thanks in advance.
